The hate government crowd has beaten America down to where it can do no big projects except for war. Way to go conservos/ libertarians. This is the real pity. Some us grew up in an American that had confidence that it could do big projects. In today's climate the Interstate Highway System for instance could not be made and it would be called an "earmarK' or conservos/Liberatarians would be talking about we can't afford it unless it is made a toll road and owned by the Arabs, Chinese or someone with money. They would be talking that it was just another "tax and spend" boondoggle that would lead to higher taxes.
Columbia Journalism Review disagrees. There's nothing wrong with using 'over' in place of 'more than'.
If Columbia Journalism Review says it's correct, then I recant. However, I suspect this is a recent change, just as "yo" is now a legitimate word.
We agree on something, and the Earth didn't crack. I am supporting Obama to get rid of the current spite-ridden Republican leadership, but those on the far left wing are pushing me back since they are proving to be just as spite-ridden. I think disagreement is not bad in and of itself. It should make us work toward compromises rather than win or die. With compromise come civility. Center left or center right is fine with me because it is centered.
I looked into because the rule sounded interesting. The OED says it's acceptable, but it mostly changed when William Cullen Bryant poopooed its usage. I think the AP Stylebook still considers it a no-no.
