I noticed that glaring omission myself when I originally read the article. Not that it would have been the most popular reason, but doesn't ANYONE have sex specifically in order to procreate any more? I think the researchers were limited by the cultural base of the people they were researching. Did they branch out into other ethnic groups, such as hispanics or middle-eastern groups, who historically have very large families? There is a reason why Rome fell, ladies and gentlemen.
