I think its partly a case of the Nuggets bringing in the new GM and showing there's a "New sheriff in town". A show of front office muscle to show they got options and aren't going to let one player get one over on the new GM.

I understand sending a player to a lesser team so you don't make your direct competition better. But then if a team is already good like Dallas, well they're already good, and you're gonna have to contend with them ANYWAY. So its whether you think he puts a top 4 team into a title contender.

If they trade Melo for young players they won't be in real competition with any of the better teams anyway. Surely they are trying to unload some garbage (Kenyon Martin) with the deal.

Any trade that won't send Melo to Houston is OK in my book.

Leaking interest in the Kings and Wolves is the Nuggets playing hardball. They're pissed at Carmelo's camp and are going to threaten to send him to Minnesota. I can't believe Minny would really trade for a guy that wants nothing to do with them, though.

Nets are looking more and more like the inevitable destination, and it's all a matter of them offering the right pieces to Denver. Favors, Damion James, and Troy Murphy with a pick.

Who cares melo's preferences..Nuggets and Melo are just like broke-up couple..if Nuggets can get Lopez through this trade, of coz they will go for it. simple as that.

also, I think we hv to give up at least k-mart, C-bud, battier + add-ons..which will be a pain for us..btw, Nuggets just don't want to send their all star to the western top teams..who will want to power up for their enemies..unless the weakest ones....==

lol what the hell do the wolves have to trade? kevin love? they're not gonna trade him. rights to rubio? definitely not trading him. who do they have left to trade that's any good? that's right, no one. flynn is out for the year with some sort of surgery. denver misfired by leaking that trade scenario; the wolves don't even have their own 1st round picks to trade in the near future (i think the clips have their unprotected 2012 one so they can't trade 2011 or 2013).

they should have said something like the raptors.

Carmelo Anthony doesn't have to be careful what he wishes for

    Sat Aug 28,2010

    By Matt Moore

As the rumor mill starts to churn more heavily about the eventual destination of Carmelo Anthony now that it's accepted he wants out of Denver, there will be conflicting reports. Some will say that the Nuggets don't care a lick about what Carmelo wants and will trade him to whomever they please. These reports will be sourced out of the Nuggets camp or those close to them. Others will say that the Knicks are still in play or that one of his preferred teams is likely. Those, as you can guess, will come from Melo's camp.

It's a cute game, but has little to do with what will actually occur. What's interesting is how this will play out and determining who exactly has leverage in this situation. And that's where the latest tweet from the reliable Sam Amico comes in.

Amico reports the following concerning prospective partners for the Nuggets:

Early word around NBA is Nuggets will try to trade Carmelo to 1 of 3 teams: Wolves, Kings, Nets. In other words, careful what you wish for.
less than a minute ago via web
    Sam Amico
    SamAmicoNBA

It's very likely that Amico's on the money here. These are the types of teams that the Nuggets will be targeting as trade partners. They're loaded with young talent, draft picks, and a handful of expiring contracts. The Nuggets will get what they want for Melo. Who cares what Melo or CAA has to say about it?

Well, for one, the teams that will be trying to trade for him.

The problem with this tactic lies with the original source of this whole shebang, Melo's extension. As a free agent next summer, the Nuggets were trying to lock down a max extension for Melo. His reticence to sign that extension was the first sign that maybe Anthony wasn't quite as happy as he let on.

It's also that extension that maintains Anthony's leverage. Because those teams do have what the Nuggets want. And the Nuggets certainly have what those teams want... to a degree. They have access to Carmelo Anthony... for a single season. It's Anthony's own control over the subsequent season that will prevent the Nuggets from trading him to whomever they please.

Any team looking to acquire Anthony will want him in an extend-and-trade that locks him up for further seasons. After all, these teams have already established a core of young players, they've done their cap cleaning and draft building. They won't be giving up players with upside and future picks for a one-year rental of Anthony. Which means the Nuggets need him to sign the extension. And Anthony's only likely to do that if he assents to where he's being traded.

Anthony's extension and trade flexibility are inter-connected. The Nuggets don't just have to find a trade partner looking to acquire Melo enough to surrender the pieces they're looking to get back, they have to find a partner attractive enough to Anthony to convince him to commit to the future.

We have three actors in this little play. Anthony and his people wants his extension under the current CBA, and to relocate to a new team that fits the lifestyle which he wants to become accustomed (fame, fortune, and championships), as well as maintain their leverage in negotiations not just for Anthony but future clients. His current team needs to get the pieces they want back for Anthony and maintain their leverage in negotiations with players to not be held hostage by their demands. And his new team wants Carmelo Anthony to make them into a contender, for the next three years and beyond.

The Nets are a prospective partner, because they are relocating to Brooklyn, a market he likely finds attractive. The Kings have two definite stars, but the market isn't really there for him. The Wolves? Um... Darko's fun to hang out with?

But any of these teams have to be able to convince Anthony they have the combination of elements he desires or else they'll only be renting him.

The Nuggets have leverage, that much is clear from the events of the past week. The best scenario is convincing him to stay in Denver, sign the extension and move forward. But that bridge may have already been crossed, then lit on fire. But to act like Carmelo is subject to the whims of the Nuggets ignores not only the realities created by his extension situation, but the new reality of the empowered player that have shifted the NBA so greatly in the past three months.

What Carmelo Anthony isn't a new phenomenon. Didn't Tracy McGrady do the same thing when he was traded from Orlando.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Francis' meeting with Magic triggers trade

    Associated Press

HOUSTON -- Tracy McGrady is leaving his hometown team for Houston in a blockbuster trade that sends Steve Francis to the Orlando Magic and gives the Rockets one of the NBA's most intriguing duos.

The deal, which had been in the works for nearly two weeks, also sent forward Juwan Howard and guards Tyronn Lue and Reece Gaines to the Rockets. The Magic will acquire guard Cuttino Mobley and forward Kelvin Cato.

"I just knew it was going to take time," McGrady told ESPN Tuesday night. "I'm happy and it's time to move on."

The trade was finalized after Francis' meeting with Magic general manager John Weisbrod and other team officials in Orlando on Tuesday.

McGrady, a two-time NBA scoring champion, now joins 7-foot-5 Yao Ming to form a combination that potentially could be as dominant as the Los Angeles Lakers' three-time title twosome of Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant.

"I sure hope so," McGrady said in the ESPN interview. "I can't predict the future, but it definitely would be nice. The ultimate goal is to win a championship for the Houston Rockets."

And with the Lakers splintering apart since coming up short in the NBA Finals, Houston immediately looks like a serious championship contender in the Western Conference next season.

McGrady signed with the Magic in 2000, thinking he and Grant Hill could push an up-and-coming squad over the top. But Hill's bad left ankle limited him to 37 games in four seasons, and McGrady's load grew heavier with each passing year.

Tired of carrying a mediocre franchise, McGrady vowed to exercise the opt-out clause in his contract that was to go into effect at the end of next season. But Orlando did not want him to leave without the team receiving compensation -- like O'Neal did eight years ago.

McGrady, 25, becomes the fourth defending scoring champion in NBA history to be dealt away, and the first since the Buffalo Braves sent Bob McAdoo to the New York Knicks in 1976.

Francis, a three-time All-Star, averaged 16.6 points, 5.5 rebounds and 6.2 assists last season to join Oscar Robertson, Magic Johnson and Hill as the only players in league history to average at least 15 points, five rebounds and five assists in each of their first five years.

Francis, Mobley and Yao led the Rockets to the playoffs last season for the first time in five years. Houston lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in the first round.

But Francis, who flourished in an up-tempo offense for the previous four years, was put on the summer trading block after posting the worst offensive numbers of his career in new coach Jeff Van Gundy's slower-paced scheme.

When the deal was first discussed last week, Francis balked at joining the rebuilding Magic. But Francis' agent, Jeff Fried, said a talk between the point guard and Weisbrod after Thursday's draft helped alleviate some of the All-Star guard's concerns about joining the Magic.

Fried said Weisbrod convinced Francis that the Magic could improve quickly with the additions of No. 1 draft pick Dwight Howard, a 6-foot-11 high school star from Atlanta, and point guard Jameer Nelson, the point guard from St. Joseph's who won virtually every college player of the year award last season.

Francis was also impressed that the Magic wanted to make him the centerpiece of the rebuilding franchise.

"I think that he certainly believes in what John is trying to build," Fried told The Associated Press Tuesday. The Magic "could well have gotten almost any player in the league for Tracy McGrady. Steve felt pretty pleased with their reasons for talking to him and what his role might be in the rebuilding process."

Mobley, one of Francis' best friends, comes to Orlando after averaging 17.1 points and four rebounds a game in six seasons with the Rockets. A second-round pick by Houston in 1998, Mobley has become one of the league's most underrated players.

Cato, a 6-11 power forward, averaged 6.2 points and 6.2 rebounds in five years with the Rockets.

"Some days you are going to be some place. Some days you can be moved tomorrow," Cato told Houston television station KRIV. "You take it for what it's worth."

Howard, a 10-year veteran, has averaged 17.8 points and 7.4 rebounds with Washington, Dallas, Denver and Orlando. Last season, he was second on the Magic in scoring (17.0 points per game) and first in rebounding (7.0).

Lue averaged career highs of 10.5 points and 4.2 assists with Orlando last season, his first as a full-time starter. The 6-foot guard played on two championship teams with the Lakers in 2000 and 2001.

Gaines, the 15th overall pick of the 2003 NBA draft, saw little time as a rookie with the Magic. He averaged only 1.8 points in 9.6 minutes for the league's worst team.

"I think they did a tremendous job on this trade," McGrady said. "I think both teams are going to benefit."

He's going to the Nets, because he wants the glamor. I called it on day one, and I'll be shocked if he lands anywhere else.

    Minny?

Why Minny? How will that help his wife's career?

Well they can play those same games that didnt work with Bosh and he went nowhere and they got nothing. They have the right GM from Toronto to do it. I think its a repeat performance again. Guy loses his job and Denver is ruined after this season the longer it goes and the lesser they get. The fact is if he doesnt want to resign with any of them? Doubtful those locations bring anything to what they want. Rockets still in the drivers seat unless they are that stubborn about wanting the worst deals or Carmelo wants the worst teams only.
