Westheimer @ Post Oak does still have restaurants. State Grille and Canyon Cafe come to mind. That area, however, is still not a place to "go out". Midtown, downtown, and other venues in sporadic areas are where you go these days. Give it another three years. Houston's nightlife will have an area that kicks 6th street's butt. (not that 6th in Austin is even where you go these days. Last I checked, it was places on 4th.)
I'm glad that Houston will get some good nightlife, not that it really effects me much anyway. I'd be happy with a good Irish Pub or festive (dueling) Piano Bar. Back when ... Houston had some decent clubs, but they were generally great distances apart and transient. Sixth was great because of the close proximity of so many clubs. Where is Houston's new 'improved' bar scene going to be? Downtown? There used to be nothing downtown. They rolled-up the streets on the weekends.
Main Street was going gangbusters a few years ago. Roughly 20 places to go over there. It is not the hip place to be now, but next yr it probably will be. Midtown is where you go these days. Roughly 10 different spots over there. Houston's night scene used to be all over. These days, that is changing...
No competition in my head. Two completely different locales. Cohen was saying that all Houston had was bars on Westheimer, which, these days, is inaccurate.
FFB, you can apply both of these statements to the last 15+ years(if not longer) to Houston's night life. Houston is all about the latest fad. Always has been. Always will......unless you flush the fad and just pull a Digital Underground and Doowutchalike.
Fair statement.. What's your point? What Major city hasn't had a renaissance every decade or so? Choose your battles wisely my friend. He who lives in an igloo has to live in a house made of igloo ice. Think about it.
