Most of the good RTS games have been mentioned previously, AOEII, Red Alert II, WCIII etc. hmmm, sequals must be the flavour of the month.

As for other games, I'm still playing NBA Live 2001 (PC), and am hanging out for NBA Live 2003, which I think comes out in October. Being Australian, I have to go with a game I bought over the weekend, Cricket 2002. Very sweet game, although it occasionlly crashes for no reason. But anyway, definately the best cricket game out if you are into the sport. Also been playing V8 Challenge, avoid this game if you can and wait until Codemasters bring out their game, I think it is called V8 Supercar Driver, or V8 Race Drive or something like that.

FPS been playing Medal of Honour and Alien v Predtor II. I never really got into the first AvP, but the sequel is very good, good graphics, great storyline development and at times can be quite "scary".

The other game I have been playing is Grand Theft Auto 3, not a bad game. I guess the word to describe it is contraversial. It doesn't follow alot of morals (ie can run over people even cops!), steal cars (even cop cars, taxis and ambulances), shoot anyone you want, beat them to death etc. But nonetheless I somewhat enjoy playing it, though I don't go around and shot every person I see, or purposely go and run over people.

But back to the topic at hand, you can't go wrong with what has already been mentioned. And that is Red Alert II, Warcraft III or Age Of Empires II. I am waiting anxiouslt to play WCIII, but I can tell you the other 2 are definately worth playing. Oh just remembered, one that I didn't see mentioned was Empire Earth. Which has the same interface as AOEII, but you go through several "time periods" and can develop units from neaderthals with stone hammers, to marines with sub-machine guns. Plus you can control airborne units as well, like B-52 bombers, F-15 Strike Eagles, I think there's helicoptors in the game, and also cyborg robots as well. Hmmm, think I might go play Empire Earth later...

How do you like the militarys latest tactics?

Americas Armies releases July 4 at 01:00 and its a free game. Its supposively developed by the military.

    a quote by a friend:

"People ask "What is the army's motivation in paying for the development of, and giving away, a full version game?" Well, it's a realism game, isn't it? They're experimenting with a concept they've played around with since video games came out, and that is if they can be used to train people in tactics, etc. Pretty crazy, huh? I don't think it'll do jack **** though. "

I am the worst online AOE player ever. :(

btw, a friend of mine has a buddy who helped design Age of Mythology, and they sent me a playable demo.

It's everything you imagined. ;)

Thanks for the tip! I just picked it up a Circuit City last night. How long have you had SimGolf and are you still playing it? Do you know of a really good SimGolf site? When you use your Gary Golfer (or whatever your pro's name is), how much do you control the shots? Do you have a lot of fun playing the courses you make? How many courses can you have going at once? I haven't opened it yet, since I want to make sure I'll really enjoy it. Once I open it I can't return it.

I love it. Definitely worth opening and giving a go. I bought it last Friday, along with Neverwinter Nights. I've been alternating between the two since then. I spent almost all of Saturday playing that game. Download the demo and play it if you're not sure -- that's what I did.

    Great sim golf site: http://www.simgolfer.co.uk/

You don't really control your golfer's shots all that much. It's not like the other golf games where you have the three click swing, etc. In this one, you say what stroke to use (there are five different strokes) and where to hit it, then your player does it. It's really quite simple -- kindof a different take on the whole golf game. In playing the game, your goal is to make a course with happy golfers and great golf holes that can be used for tournaments at later points. You also need to make your golfer (Gary Golf) as good as possible so that he can play in the tournaments. To do that, you "practice" by playing the course. So you're almost constantly playing golf with the Gary Golf guy while you are designing the course.

I am not sure how many courses you can have going at once -- I'm only 14 holes into one. It's hard to put a finger on why this game is so fun. I love making new golf holes and seeing how players do on them.

Unfortunately, it can get frustrating at times. I built my course way too close to the clubhouse, etc. so now I'm running out of room. A guy comes buy to sell you more land (he plays your course and if he likes it, he'll approve a land purchase) . Unfortunately, I was on my last necessary land purchase and he got angry on the last hole and didn't approve it. That sucked.

But on the whole, it's an enormously fun game. Definitely worth the $19 it costs. Try the demo and I'm sure you will love it!

Thanks for all the info! Vengeance comes through again with the detailed info I was looking for. I'll just trust you and open it up tonight. I'm trying to decide whether or not I should also get Warcraft III this weekend. I probably will, I just think 59.99 is a lot for a game. Anyone else on here already have Warcraft III, and if so are you happy with it so far? I really like the idea of heroes, and I'm interested to see how much it changes the gameplay from Warcraft II. There goes my idea about starting to workout at 24 hour fitness.

I picked up Warcraft III today. I have not played much just to go thru the basic tutorial missions which are real easy. The Heroes are kinda cool and add a little RPG type atmosphere to the game. You level them up and they can perform special attacks. As far as the $59.99 pricetag goes if you do a lot of shopping at Best Buy when you pick it up from them you get a mail in rebate for a $10 BB gift card. Not that it makes the price any smaller but you do at least get a little something extra. I also got a free action figure(not that that is a big deal to me) that some of the people buying the game there were fighting over

Edit: Played a little more in the single campaign and it is really good. I also tried skirmish but I seem to keep getting my ass whipped. THe computer just rushes me before I can get any units built :(

I got the collector's this morning. I thought about going out on independence day, but I'll be spending the day beating the single-player game. Let me know if you guys want to have cc.net games.

Sounds like fun to me, though I'm not very good at RTS games. About the only people I could beat were my housemates in college.

I also bought warcraft 3. havent tried the campaigns yet but the single player maps are hard as hell. i build up my defense as fast as i can and the enemy still quickly comes and kills me. I'm sure i'll master it in no time though.

I just got WCIII today also. Haven't gone home to play it yet though. I was going to SA this weekend, but with the flood and all, it looks like I may spend the long weekend playing WCIII :)

I'm up for a cc.net game whenever. The one caveat is this -- I SUCK AT RTS MULTIPLAYER!!! Single player I do fine at, but multiplayer I am really awful. I was awesome at the original C+C. After that, it's been downhill.

B -- I'll send you my SimGolf course when I'm done with it. It's probably not as good as I think it is, but I can say that it is a DAMNED challenging course, and my "fun" rating is over 2000. I have 7 or 8 holes ranked in the top 18 in the "Sim Country" by the game's "Sim Golf Magazine". Every hole is either really long and narrow or short and trickey.

What are some older games that are still fun to play but don't come with the $59 price tag? (Red Alert II, War craft III or Age Of Empires II
    Empire Earth)this style-- thanks.

    KingCheetah,

You can probably get Conquest Frontier Wars for below 10 bucks at GameStop, it is fun and has cool graphics, plus it was designed by fellow cc.netter DaDakota, but don't hold that against it. ;) J/K DaDa. So, about that beer ....

There are a ton of great games out there at great prices. Some of my personal favorites are:

Starcraft, Deus Ex, System Shock 2, The Last Express, Planescape: Torment, Baldur's Gate 1 or 2, Red Alert 2, Any of the Monkey Island games, Grim Fandango, Civilization II, Alpha Centauri, Fallout, and Heroes of Might and Magic II (greatest game I've ever played)

I've seen a line of older games (1 to 3 years old) come out in the stores where it bundles two games in this neat CDROM case thing. A lot of those games are great games! You can find many of these games over in that section -- away from all the game boxes. Lots of them for $9.99.

Red, do you play the expansion, Age of Empires II, The Conqueror?

I love playing this game so much, and the online dimension of it will keep you hooked forever. The game is a bit more complictated then starcraft/warcraft type games due to the amount of units, so it will take time to learn and even longer if you want good RTS competition online, so by the time you learn to play, Age of Mythology would probably be out. Even still, I would still recommend this game.
