So would I. Although I'm sure total guaranteeing the 5th year would involve us winning titles, so they're probably not likely to be reached. Either way, win win. :)

Basically, under the doomsday scenario some of the pessimistic fans may believe, Scola's deal basically becomes 4yr/$36 mil.

Thanks for this. (Actually, the contracts have pleased me; not concerned me.)

Why do people here care about players' contracts? Les is paying them.

If Les is willing to pay lux tax, I will be happy to see that all rockets' players take the max.

We are paying an awful lot for dudes who take charges and D. That's almost 14.2 mln for 11 pts per game and 7 rebounds. There has to be cheaper and younger version in the 6'9" range available

Salaries effect our team. This isn't the MLB. I'm ok with these signings though

People don't seem to understand how important certain players are to this team. At one point or another, you can't just keep trading away people or getting new people to come into the team. I'm liking this current team because they have been together at least a year now, and hopefully we will keep building on it. The chemistry will be there and the team will be much better because they will know each other.

I'm glad we gave Scola what he deserve because he is worth his contract. He proved that towards the end of the season.

GREAT thread. And it does deserve to be on it's own. WAY too much misleading (or assumptions of) information in some threads. Thanks for posting those numbers.

I'm glad to get these deals done, it's a little more money than i hoped, but not as much as I feared, I though someone like the Nets were gonna offer a monster deal. These deals are inexpensive enough that we still have a lot of finacial flexiblility next year.

Scola plays below the rim to begin with, so age shouldn't hit him as hard as it hits others, and Lowry will only be 28 at the end of his deal, and considering he's good enough to start, this is a really good deal.

how can you not love these guys? way to go morey. the speed with which he matched lowry and reached an agreement w/ scola is impressive and probably intimidating to other GMs. i wonder if morey's rep is getting to the point where other teams are reluctant to deal with him.

We may overpaid Scola a bit. And we definietly overpaid Lowry after seeing Ronie Brewer's new contract.

Very nice. Thank you for the information. knowing the specifics of the contracts lets you know that this was a great deal for the Rockets even though we are in luxury tax for this year.

They also could be planning on moving Jefferies, Andersen, and maybe Battier's contract at least at the trade deadline to avoid the luxury tax if we are not playing well to get in playoffs. The revenue they bring in for the playoffs dramtically helps pay the extra amount of luxury tax anyways. Im sure there are contengency plans for every scenario and we are in a nice situation to rebuild on the fly next year if that is the case.

Because if the players don't bring you to a championship, you end up hamstrung in the inability to effectively acquire additional assets. A player's value in trades is in direct relation to his contract vs. market price.

VERY interesting. The bad part (for the player) of having contract guarantees/incentives based on team success is that a player has little control over trades (at least after one year in Scola's case).

For instance, if Scola is traded in Year 3 of his contract to the crappiest team in the league, and that team continues to suck through Year 4 of his deal, through no fault of his own, Scola would be out millions of bucks on that final year. On the flip side, that crappy team could have a Dampier-like trade chip in 2014.

I think this actually happened to Devean George a few years back when he was traded from Dallas to Golden State (?). He had a performance bonus based on team wins, with a threshold set based on Dallas's "bar" for a successful season. Needless to say, he did not get that bonus after going to Golden State.

I am curious to see how exactly the bonus is structured-- what part of is based on games played, what part of it is based on team success, which seasons count, etc. I also wonder if they agree to have the last year based on the ROCKETS success no matter where Scola plays. May be a little weird, but I guess people are allowed to have such a contract term as long as both sides agree, no? .

Yeah, me, too. Shamsports.com is typically very good about spelling all that stuff out (for instance, go to their site and scroll over Brandon Roy's name on the Portland salary page; you'll be surprised how detailed they have his contract).

Can't wait to see what Shamsports has for the numbers when they update the site (probably later this summer).

Are the Rox over the Lux tax line this year or not?

    Just based upon prelimary figures?
