This is on assumption of course, but if you a 20 year old boy, how would you know anything about reagan than whats been in the history books or word of mouth?

Are you going to say they weren't? They were evil! Geez, this just kills me. He commanded Gorby to "tear down this wall" at the Berlin Wall. He even joked about starting the bombing in five minutes, which was awesome. I remember that I first realized how cool he really during one of the 1980 presidential debates. Carter kept attacking him and Reagan simply retorted with a big grin "There you go again, Mr. President."

He made some mistakes, like running away from Lebanon after thousands of Marines were killed and allowing some of his staff far too much independence, which led to the Iran/Contra deal, which reall did not bother me that much. Here are some views of the Reagan presidency from the Heritage Foundation. I think he deserves a place on Mount Rushmore. They're already naming an aircraft carrier after him, which is outstanding.

You have every right to mourn the loss of a former President. He led our country for 8 years, and no matter the differences he was at the helm, and it's a sad day. But having said that, I urge you to read a couple books on Roosevelt, there's a reason he's on Mt. Rushmore. I'd also add Harry Truman and FDR, Reagan's hero, to that list. Just because you didnt live at that time doesnt mean you should denigrate their accomplishments.

Reagan did a bunch of stuff I didn't like and he pursued policies I disagreed with, but he stayed true to the greater ideals of the country, especially when on the foreign affairs stage. Here's Bill and Hill...

Statement of Former President Bill Clinton and Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton

Hillary and I will always remember President Ronald Reagan for the way he personified the indomitable optimism of the American people, and for keeping America at the forefront of the fight for freedom for people everywhere. It is fitting that a piece of the Berlin Wall adorns the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington.

President Reagan demonstrated his strength and resolve after leaving office when he shared his struggle with Alzheimer's Disease with the world. We will always remember his tremendous capacity to inspire and comfort us in times of tragedy, as he did after the loss of the space shuttle Challenger. Now he, too, has "slipped the surly bonds of Earth to touch the face of God," and we can rest assured that, as joyous a place as Heaven is, his wit and sunny disposition are making it an even brighter place to be.

Hillary and I send our prayers to Nancy, their children and their many friends and family, as well as our gratitude for the life of a true American original.

Mt. Rushmore? No. A Coin or Bill? No. More Airports or roads or buildings? No. How about we honor the man, his family, and other families going through the same thing by fully funding this...

By his side, but her own person

    BY DEBORAH BARFIELD BERRY
    WASHINGTON BUREAU, NYPost

    June 6, 2004

WASHINGTON -- In a rare appearance last month, former first lady Nancy Reagan spoke at an event to raise money for embryo stem cell research. She hoped, she said, that others would benefit from research on such diseases as Alzheimer's, which had afflicted her husband, Ronald.

"Ronnie's long journey has finally taken him to a distant place where I can no longer reach him," she said. "Because of this, I'm determined to do whatever I can to save other families from this pain."

Reagan, 82, who was married to the nation's 40th president for 52 years, had been by the ailing president's side, particularly as the family publicly acknowledged his bout with the disease 10 years ago.

Reagan's recent public support of stem cell research, however, has put her at odds with other Republicans, including President George W. Bush, who opposes the research.

Still, Reagan, whose support carries much clout, is doing what she says she has to do. "I just don't see how we can turn our back on this," she said at the fund-raiser.

In recent days, Reagan's family and friends had reported that the former president wasn't faring well, saying he barely knew them or his wife, whom many describe as extremely devoted. "This is it," Nancy Reagan had reportedly said. Late last week, she called their children, Ron Jr., Patti Davis and Ronald Reagan's son, Michael, from a previous marriage, to their California home.

In a brief statement yesterday, Nancy Reagan acknowledged her husband's death and thanked everyone for their prayers.

Reagan was particularly protective of the former president and his privacy. For years, she tended to him as he lived in relative seclusion and battled the disease.

The couple had always appeared very close and was often spotted holding hands and calling each other by endearing terms. Ronald Reagan was known to call Nancy "Mommy."

Reagan, a former actor, married Nancy, an actress, in 1952.

While the two were very close, there were family strains with their children.

Along the way, however, Nancy Reagan has also dealt with less than flattering images of her as coldhearted, superficial and a clotheshorse.

Reagan was once criticized for buying extremely expensive china for the White House. It was reported, however, that former first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton once approached her and thanked her for the china, which she said she had used often.

Nancy Reagan also has been ridiculed for consulting with an astrologer when her husband was president to map out the timing of his speeches and travel.

But more often she was credited or blamed for her behind-the-scenes role at the White House.

Like other first ladies, Nancy Reagan took up the cause of some high profile issues, including her "Just Say No" anti-drug campaign.

After her husband's illness, she became more politically active and independent, some historians said yesterday.

Also yesterday, politicians, historians and others heaped praised on Ronald Reagan's presidency and Nancy Reagan's role in his life. Republicans have long touted the Reagan years.

Last year, CBS canceled a mini-series on the couple's lives after complaints from conservatives and Republicans.

Get a life ... No matter how much you hate someone, when they pass away the classy thing to do is to step away and not say anything. There will be plenty of time to debate his place in history in the coming months and years. This is a time of mourning, and obviously you show no respect for anyone but your own selfish person.

I didn't care for REagan as a president at all, but I won't use the occasion of his death to bring up everything about him that I didn't like.

    RIP Mr. President

What a truly great man. He epitimized the word leader. He may not have been an expert on many things but he was effective as the leader of the US.

Ronald Reagan definitely earned his nickname, "The Great Communicator". I'm sure the current pResident wishes he had half of Reagan's communication skills. The other thing I liked about Reagan was his positive outlook on life and the country, and how he helped the country feel good about itself again.

Ronald Reagan's domestic policies, however, lead me to despise his Presidency. He very nearly bankrupted the country with "defense" spending. His economic policies instantly made hundreds of thousands of American citizens homeless. I never personally saw a homeless person in the Southwest part of Houston until 1981. He doubled the national debt while preaching for a smaller federal government, which to me is a measure of hypocracy. He gave the Medal of Freedom to Whitaker Chambers, a pathological liar and an American traitor.

In short, I liked the person, but not his policies.

May he rest in peace. May his family find comfort in their memories of him.

Exactly what I thought. I'm almost 27 and do not remember a whole lot about his presidency because I was so young when he was president. How in the hell can someone 6 years younger than me know anything about him?

I didn't want to start another thread, but here are some great quotes from Reagan:

    1) "I hope your all Republicans" - to surgeons as he entered the operating room after the assasination attemp

    2) "Honey I forgot to duck" - his greeting to Nancy after the shooting

    3) "The govt. is not the solution, the govt. is the problem" - first inaugural address in 1981

    4) "Republicans believe every day is the Fourth of July, but Democrats believe everyday is April 15th" - in 1984

    5) "Trees cause more pollution than automobiles do" - in 1981

    6) "A tree is a tree. How many more do you have to look at." - opposing expansion of Redwood National Park in 1966 as gov. of Calif.

    7) "There you go again" - responding to Pres. Carter's attack on Reagan in 1980 during televised debate

    Other notes:

    - In 1962, he changed from Dem to Republican
    - In Aug. 1981, he fires 11,350 air traffic controllers who strike
    - In July 1981, he nominates Judge O'Connor to Supreme Court (1st female)

That was a funny quote but it was revealed later that Reagan didn't actually say it. The doctor's at the time said Reagan was far too injured, in an out of conciousness, etc. and didn't actually make that remark. His advisors came up with that one and released it.

I'm pretty sure everyone here has never met god or jesus so should I give them crap just because they post their religious beliefs?
BTW I'm 32 and was a teenager during the 1980's.
