I think the country does function a lot better when you have a president of one party and a congress of the other.

Deficit spending gives politicians, of both parties, more power. This is why neither Democrats or Republicans really want to get serious about doing anything about it.

For all the yapping between the left and right, the truth is that our elected representatives are far more alike than they are different.

[rant]You can do more than that. For one, if you don't like the direction of your party, you can work to change it. Volunteer, give money, run for local office, talk to people who think like you do, recruit people to run, organize, work... and make a difference. A large part of the problem with Repubs these days is too many sane party members let the crazies cower them. If you're at all serious and care even a little whit about the future of your party and your country, you won't pull a "Yoda."

It really pisses me off when I see this attitude... "Oh, the world is not like I want it to be, so all I can do is go home and pretend it's out of me hands until it magically becomes the world I want it to be."

Look, very few of us are MLK or Eisenhower or Walesa or Tutu... but none of them would have had success if weren't for thousands of regular people working with them towards similar goals.

And very few of us are rich enough to significantly influence an election... but we can in small ways through the activities mentioned above and, of course, voting.

Did Lincoln quit when the Douglas pro-slavery forces prevented him twice from becoming a Senator? No, but a lesser man could have easily rationalized that those forces were too entrenched to ever let him hold higher office and he might as well go back and live a comfortable life being a lawyer.

Suck it up people. Act like you're an American and know what that means.[/rant]

Try paying more attention. Or thinking outside the simplistic and farcical nonsense of American politics.
