Not a very heralded recruit. From Corrigan Camden. 6'2" - 6'4" 210-220. They'll probably play him at LB, although I think he's the perfect size for a safety. But, reese only likes to play corners at safeties, but I digress on that subject. Ketch also said he was the most impressive QB at the Texas camp (over Flynn and Drew Tate), but that's not where he's gonna play. Also, he could be a first round pick in baseball. If you haven't been, you should check out hornfans.
gr8-1: I check out hornfans, occasionally. Good site with humor, and some good gameday stuff... but they're a little too optimistic about UT's recruiting.
They tend to have every reason to be. Mack has been near flawless. That's a great board, like here. Lot's of exes and coaches post there.
No question Brown is the best recruiter in the nation, but it's questionable whether he will be able to cherry pick the state anymore. I doubt it if the Aggies hire Franchione. If Franchione has success, Mack won't be able to lean on recruiting anymore. Competition is good. Having the best recruiting class in the nation isn't everything. Honestly, how many college football players consider the town? Slocum had no problem cleaning up on Texas recruiting when McWilliams and Mackovic were in Austin. Austin can be 50x better than B/CS, but the bottom line is the players are going to sign with the school where 1) they can get playing time, 2) they can win conference and national titles, and 3) they have use of first class facilities. Currently I believe UT has better facilities, but it's only a matter of time before A&M catches up. Edited
smokey: Of course they look at the city. They spend 4 or 5 (except for WRs like Roy Williams) years of their life there. Would you want to live in a place you hated for that long? I sure as hell wouldn't. Location is important for any job... and playing college ball is pretty much a job. And if you actually care about your education... it's important to. I picked BC in good part because I love Boston. TAMU cleaned up in-state in recruiting because McWilliams and Mackovic were actually bad recruiters/coaches. Maybe I'm wrong... and in truth, the theory that, the coaches being equal, Texas will win the recruiting battle more often than not comes more from the "experts" than anything else. I follow recruiting... but I'm no expert . Mel Kiper once said that in a chat... and while his ability to assess talent is iffy, his experience in recruiting politics is excellent. So, I'm inclined to believe it...
It’s somewhat cyclical, and you have to look who was at the helm at that time. When you have a coach who does not put forth the effort to recruit, or some one who did not think that was an important part of running a program until it was too late (like Akers, McWilliams & Mackovic), sure Texas will and did have down times. I will tell you what, there was a very interesting story that was passed along to me by a friend (who was an A&M no less) that I think is very telling. He posted this on a website and I believe sent it into the Dallas Morning News who was interested in it.
UoH would be lucky to get a coach of RC's caliber. Actually, TAMU would be lucky to get a coach of RC's caliber, but I digress.
I must admit to you, Smokey, that too was the predominant thought that floated around in my head as well!!!
If any woman told me "Lets not move to Austin. It's too freaky". I'd say "Don't let the door hit you on the way out!"
Drew Tate was contacted by Iowa, and UH. So if UH hires Sloc, maybe Drew Tate will sign his letter of intent with UH.
Aggies have very short term memories--they forgot how things were before Sherril/RC took the helm. RC was their winningest coach ever for Pete Sake. Personally, I hope RC either gets picked up by Texas for some role (I say fire the DC and hire RC, or maybe he could be a ) or the University of Arizona fire's Machovic and hires him. RC is a good coach with lots of connections--his firing is totally due to UT finally finding a coach who could recruit as well as the school could sell itself.
I don't know if it's a short term-memory, or the fact that I was wearing diapers at that time. But seriously, I'm not here to discredit RC's overall achievement, eventhough a lot of those wins did in fact come from the SWC. But the question is, "what have you done for me lately?" 29-23 over his last four years! Fifth in Big 12 South! Two lop-sided ass whoopings at the hands of Texas! Four home losses this season! It might be different if this was some half-assed football program that had little to no fan support, but I don't think those results are acceptable for A&M and the 86,000 fans that come to see the games. Coaches have been fired for much less than that! It got to the point where they were only keeping him around because of his past success, and that doesn't make much sense.
R.C. was fired because he is the most overrated coach in college football. R.C. never won the big games, never won the bowl games, and got his wining record against inferior teams. R.C. was good before the Aggies went to the Big 12. I also don't like the way he never blames himself, to him it is allways someone elses fault. I am glad he is gone, and wish him well, where ever he goes.
