looks like a day of reshuffling the deck in the Big XII Solich cans three defensive assistants, gives up calling plays LINCOLN (AP) -- Nebraska football coach Frank Solich fired three of his defensive assistants and announced Monday that he will no longer call his team's offensive plays. The coaches who were released from the team were defensive coordinator Craig Bohl, secondary coach George Darlington and rush ends coach Nelson Barnes. Solich said he has not decided who will take over his work as offensive coordinator. Solich, like his predecessor Tom Osborne, had served in that role while also head coach. "We are taking the necessary steps to get this program turned back around," Solich said. He said hiring a new defensive coordinator will be his top priority. Solich said defensive line coach Jeff Jamrog and graduate assistant Jimmy Burrow will handle the defensive game plan for the Cornhuskers' upcoming bowl game. The university will honor all terms of the fired coaches' contracts, which remain in effect until June 30, 2004, according to a statement from the athletic department. Solich said the decisions to fire three of his assistants weren't easy. "I appreciate that these coaches have dedicated themselves to this profession and this program, but we feel we need to move forward at this time," Solich said. Darlington had been a Husker assistant for 30 years. He was hired in 1973 by Osborne and worked most of that time with Solich, who was an assistant for 19 years before his promotion to head coach in 1998. Darlington said Monday that he had enjoyed his career at Nebraska. "To have been a part of one of the most dominant and respected programs in the history of the sport fulfills a boyhood dream," Darlington said. Players were instructed during a team meeting Monday not to comment to news reporters about the coaching changes. Could the option finally be tossed out the window?
Every team who hires a new coach goes through this process. If the Ags get Franchione or a big name, the transfers and decommits will be minimal.
Kinda hate to see it happen but it was time, that program is on a downswing and if they want to keep it from going in the toilet a change needed to be made. My dad's an Ag and he feels the same way.
Im guessing AtM is not heading to a Bowl Game like they were predicted to. Am I Right??? I'm sure RC will get picked up by somebody else. He is a underrated coach, who dosent deserve this. All hes done is win and win. AtM has to high expectations but there not up there with the great football programs, theyre just trying to compete with texas but they will never catch back up. R.C is a victime of his own sucess. Aggies will regret this once they start going 6-6 year in and year out.
Thank you! Another thing is how many top recruits is Texas going to get before some of these kids realize that the Longhorns are 3 deep with all-state players at every position!
I find it funny also how some Longhorn fans block out the period before Mack Brown arrived. The Aggies were the dominant program in the state and used to deliver regular whippings to UT. Anyone who thinks the new A&M coach can't push UT back to # 2 in the state is foolish. UT, A&M, and OU are all national championship caliber schools. They have the budgets and support to get the job done. The Aggies want the recent success of UT and OU and will do anything to get it. They're offering crazy numbers to Franchione. I believe one of the reasons for the quick firing of Slocum was to get Franchione on board ASAP. Funny thing is A&M doesn't have an AD yet. I don't think A&M would fire Slocum without having a replacement in mind.
When the son of an All-SWC Aggie defensive lineman wants to play special teams at Texas instead of playing a position at A&M, there is a problem in the program
A&M is already one of the top schools in recruiting this year, in fact I read an article that has them in the top 3 so far this year. What happens to the guys that have already agreed to sign?
An average recruiter at TAMU can out-recruit an average recruiter at UT any given year, but not over 5. Mack Brown is a sensational recruiter. No matter who the Ags get, he probably won't outclass Mack as far as recruiting is concerned. And as far as selling points go... Texas has more. Whether you like it or not, there's a real perception out there that College Station is racist. I'm not commenting on the truth or lack thereof of that issue. But the perception exists. And, like it or not, the majority of top recruits are black. That's a big handicap. Besides, Austin's a Top 5 place to live in the country. College Station's... for some people, particularly those who like small towns... but for far fewer people. SUPERMAC34: TAMU is top 3 only because of the # of recruits. If you average them out by their quality rating, TAMU is in the 10-15 range. Penn St. did this in the mid to late 90's. Led to good ratings early on, but the classes slump towards signing day.
Mack survived 63-14 and two other embarassing losses to OU last year to recruit several stellar classes. He swept the year of the big 3 wr's, the year of the OL's, and as well as the year of the DL last year. Now, whether they're coached correctly when they get here is debatable. To convince that many great players to come when they know how much competition will be there is incredible. Some guys aren't afraid of competition. FYI, Rod Wright was named big 12 Defensive freshman POY. Eric Foreman committed to Texas today.
