Well, you don't get to make $40,000,000 a year by being stupid. By hiring a profile independent investigator, Goodell just bought himself several months in the hopes the heat on him will dissipate by that time. I don't like it but it is a brilliant move.

Btw, Ray Rice could have killed his girlfriend when her head hit the elevator railing. There are no reports of neurological deficits, but you never know about head traumas.

You wanna know why? It probably wasn't the first time. Or the second time.

The NFL doesn't care and never will.

Roger Goodell is a lifer, he knows the long term owners well and is "one of their guys". They won't get rid of him and honestly they are so arrogant they don't think they have to. This is an attack on the NFL to them. They know people will watch no matter what. The owners control the players union, they control the politics in the cities where they reside and they have always gotten what they want when they want.

Your credibility isn't as good as the AP.

It has more to do with common sense than credibility.

If keeping Goodell is bad enough for business, the owners will dump him (officially it would be a resignation). Simple as that. Sure enough they are arrogant and don't care about doing what is right. But money talks and if he becomes radioactive, he's gone regardless of relationships. Goodell won't want to stay if he's harmful to the NFL because of those relationships.

This will all blow over. He's not going anywhere. How many fans are going to cancel season tickets because Goodell is the commissioner? Zero.

what is right at this point? what about the NFLPA for not having something in place for this? this is not the first case of domestic violence in the NFL. What about the wife with that instagram or tweet whatever it was? she should have left him. What about the courts who didn't make rice get any jail time? seems like goodell is the scapegoat for everyone.

It's been interesting to watch/read/listen to reactions to the Rice incident and Goodell's handling. The answer is clear--Goodell (who's lawyer by training, I think) screwed up...by being too soft.

The NFL doesn't have the burden of proof that the government does. He really can be judge, jury and executioner--and I think he should be.

In my opinion, any player subject of any filed legal complaint should be suspended without pay for the duration of the deliberation of a case.

If the player is found to be innocent, he should have his back pay restored with interest.

If the player is merely "not guilty", he should be suspended four games.

If guilty, he should be suspended one year for misdemeanors and for life for felonies.

Sometimes "life happens" to players, but maybe players should pick better friends/spouses/situations to avoid these messes. If their money is at risk, they will.

    Goodell has overseen:
50-something reported domestic violence cases (which begs the question of how many are unreported)
    Countless drug charges
    Countless assault charges
    Countless traffic charges

All this needs to be cleaned up.

As an aside, I'm disappointed at the lack of attention on NJ's criminal justice system--who we all know saw the tape--and their choice not to prosecute.

    This x100000000000000000.

The investigation is a joke before it even began.

The owners have to sack up and ****can Goodell.

Anything less and they're basically sending a huge "f u" to anybody who thinks domestic violence is a serious problem.

    Goodell protects his players.

I think we know how this will end.

No, that isn't it. What made Goodell "apologize" to the owners for "not getting it right" about Rice the first time was intense media ridicule. It was giving the NFL a bad name and necessitated a PR exercise (which is all the "apology" was). Fan reaction had nothing to do with it. The NFL wouldn't let it get that far.

If the media continues to deep fry the NFL and Goodell in grease and public figures continue chiming in, he's gone. Let's wait on what this investigation uncovers. If enough political figures tell the league publicly (or behind closed doors) to fire Goodell, it will happen.

    I still believe it's >50% he stays.

What a coincidence, two of Goodell's most trusted owners. Dog and Pony show.

Most people thought the NFL saw the tape. It was a matter of would that fact be made public. I figured the league would attempt to bribe the police in exchange for their silence. They probably tried to, but the police didn't cooperate.
