Splice (10%) - All I'm going to say is that I can think of a million better ways to spend a couple of hours, including knitting a sweater.
It was like they took a bunch of Eddie Murphy movies [48 hrs, Bev Hil cop] and tried to remake them in one movie HORRIBLY with Tracy Morgan -10/10 Rocket River
Dear John 9/10 I'm a sucker for the chick flicks and I love Amanda Seyfried... ------------------------------------------------ The Proposal 10/10 I loved this movie and I laughed throughout... ------------------------------------------------ When in Rome 7/10 Plenty of laughs but the plot needed some work...
Greenberg I'll watch anything starring Ben Stiller in it. It's definitely not your typical Stiller comedy as it's a bit more serious but I enjoyed it. I'd recommend it. 8/10 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Extract This movie was written by Mike Judge and stars Jason Bateman and Mila Kunis. It had mixed reviews but gave it a shot anyway. I'm glad I did. I laughed out loud a few times and chuckled throughout. Also recommended. 8/10
Greta Gerwig is the new hotness. Going back through her mumblecore filmography, even with a bag over her head. Clearly a supremely talented actress, but is apparently also completely indifferent about appearing nude in every movie. That's the kind of dedication to craft one should admire. 9/10
Let Moulin Rouge play on HD on cable this weekend, sat through it. It had been a long time since I saw it, I believe it was one of the first movies to come out once DVD's started to take off, and as such it was a big deal back then. However, in HD it seemed kind of new. All I can say about it is, everyone who worked on that movie had to be completely crazy. Not in a bad way, but everyone had to buy in to what the director was selling them, especially Leguizamo and that bunch. I can't say every bit of it worked, some of it was a little, er, ill-conceived, but for the most part, it was and remains a unique movie experience. All in all, I think it has aged well and earns an 8/10. Carry on.
Star Trek (JJ version) Popped this into the Blu-Ray this weekend as well, had been a while since I watched it. Fun as always. However, what I had not done was watch the 'Director's Commentary' for it. I almost never do. But I watched the whole thing while I was working on the computer, and it ended up back at the main menu, and I thought, what the heck, may as well turn on the commentary. So I ended up watching it twice, back to back. And I have to say, that was the most fun I have had watching a movie I have had in a long time. If you have never done that - watch a movie and then immediately watch it again with the commentary on, I highly recommend it. It was astounding to discover what a crazy experience that was for everyone involved, and amazing that it all came together as well as it did. Star Trek (Director's Commentary version) 10/10 (for the fun factor)
Me and the wife love that movie, been dying for it to come out Bluray because I think it would look amazing.
Hot Tub Time Machine. 6.5-7/10. If you take it for what it's worth, it's pretty funny. A few shock scenes that make you laugh/cringe, but I liked a lot of the silly and subtle bits of humour. The Perfect Getaway - 6/10. I'd probably give it a 7 if i didnt figure it out from the start. Not bad though. Tim Olyphant plays a good character, like usual and Milla is always watchable.
The Time Traveler's Wife I like Rachel McAdam's and I'm a sucker for romantic movies every now and then, so I thought we'd give this one a try. It had some good to great moments, and others that fell flat. It's hard to re-imagine a story like this for the big screen, considering the back and forth time-traveling nature of it. As such, it felt quite a bit disjointed at times; and we're also expected to buy into the relationship from pretty much the get-go. I'd be interested to see how Chris Nolan would interpret this, because of all the active directors out there today, he has the best vision when it comes to non-linear storylines. Still, it had it's moments, and the end was especially emotional. Doesn't quite explore life and death as much as it could, but I wonder how much they left out from the book. 6/10
Princess Mononoke. Hayao Miyazaki is truly a legend. All his stuff are so beautifully drawn and animated. I hope he will give in and direct at least one Pixar CGI film. Great movie but terrible english dubbing. James Cameron must've been watching Hayao Miyazaki's films because there are a lot of influences I can pick out in Avatar. 9/10
****Netflix Alert**** Just watched the documentary A State of Mind on Netflix. It was about two young gymnasts growing up in North Korea. The unprecedented view of modern day North Korea was what really made this interesting. Few, if any, westerners have been allowed in the country since, so this view of their lives is very unique. The blatant anti-American sentiment across the entire population was very alarming. I knew it was there, but damn! I strongly suggest this one to documentary lovers and those who seek to broaden their worldview. 9/10
Undisputed 3 on Bluray. Freaking AWESOME movie. 9.5/10 I was completely surprised. It's mindless fun but the fighting is top notch. Also watched Green Zone on the plane back from Vegas which was pretty good also. 8/10
Inception (96%) - I don't want to spoil anything so I'll keep this short and general. The movie was awesome. The kind you just can't get rid of after you leave the theater. Predators (40%) - The original Predator is one of my favorite action movies of all-time, so I knew going in that it would take a fairly good effort to appease me. Too bad that, compared to the original, this movie was crap. The kind where you just can't get rid of after you leave the theater.
