I'm glad you enjoyed it Raj! Though I must admit I only watched the online pay per view version, I'll have to rent / buy the blu ray 2 disc if its available
The picture on the BluRay version is beautiful, with vivid colours. Also, I must point out for the others viewing this thread, that John Woo was the director of this film.
Thirst: 8/10 This is the vampire movie by the Oldboy director Chan-wook Park. Its over-long and doesn't do a great job providing the answers as to why some of the characters make their decisions. I love subtlety in movies, but it seemed like a lot of things happened simply to force the movie to go in a certain direction. Anyway, that being said, it's visually awesome. The guy seriously reminds me of Kubrick in the way he executes and frames a scene. It's done in a way where you feel like you're peering in on the characters rather than being right smack in the middle. It also has a lot of thematic elements (guilt, religion) and does a pretty good job of not smacking you over the head with it. I feel like this could have been a 10 if some of the earlier scenes were shortened/cut-out or if they did a better job establishing the characters from the beginning. I still need to see Lady Vengeance.
Meet Dave 5/10 Nothing great but nothing absolutely horrible either but then again I usually like movies considered bad.
saw sherlock holmes entertained but wasnt that impressed considering the hype i felt it had i felt disappointed when the main villian wasnt moriarty 6.5/10
Avatar... I dunno, heard it was so good that I just couldn't help being disappointed a little. It was pretty good, I guess, but too predictable at times, and they moved a little quickly on some parts considering it was almost 3 hours long that was a bit of a surprise. Bit off more than they could chew in one film, I think and diluted it a bit. CGI was great, and it wasn't bad or anything, but you know how hype goes. 6.5/10
The 70's Gene Hackman trilogy: The French Connection The Conversation Night Moves A cop, a wiretapper, and a private detective. All 3 involved in cases beyond their experience and control. One maniac, one introvert, and one who vacillates between explosiveness and melancholy. Friedkin, Coppola, Penn. This is really a great set of movies, and Hackman is just one of the best. Oh, and Wes Anderson's trilogy: Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums. Very good stuff.
Just saw the following: 500 days of Summer: 7/10 Avatar: 8/10 Book of Eli: 7/10 Inglourious Basterds: 6/10
-the Soloist and Hurt Locker. I wasn't expecting much from either one, but they both turned out to be pretty decent movies. -The Men Who Stare At Goats. it's labeled a comedy, but it really isn't funny. It's still a good movie though. Clooney is such a great actor at times, and then.....a total stiff in other movies. This is one of his better films. It's hard to believe this story isn't made up.
the moon - 8.5/10. Wanted a bit more but i can't place my finger on what exactly. Avatar - 10/10 primarily based on aethetics. But certainly an entertaining story. Hurt locker - 9/10. Didnt think i'd like it as much as i did.
Inglorious Basterds - 7/10. It was done very well but I just didn't get into it that much. Probably would not make a point watch again, which is a large part of how I rate movies. Avatar - 8/10. Was ready to call this one a really great film until the last 30 or 45 minutes. The battle scenes with Michelle Rodriguez (i think that's her name) and the commander/GI Joe looking guy were too cheesy for me. Up until that point and after were great, though. The Book of Eli - 7.5/10. Entertaining and kept my interest throughout. I could see a lot of people not liking this film, though.
Anvil! The Story of Anvil -- 8 out of 10. Great profile of the band, simultaneously hilarious and touching. Not sure I've seen a documentary tread that line so effectively. I do wish they included a little more of the music.
Hurt Locker B+ Thought it was really well done, wasn't sure what to expect but found it very captivating.
500 Days of Summer A great love story turned on it's head. As the narrator explains, it's not a love story, but it actually is...it's just a realistic depiction of love. You don't always end up with the first person you fall in love with, or the second or third, etc. This isn't some fantasy depiction of love that pretty much every romantic comedy subscribes to. And for that, I think a lot of people can identify with the story. About the only thing I didn't like was the narration. I just didn't care for the actual voice used. But I loved the camerawork and editing. 7/10
