Panic In The Streets (1950) - 8/10. snappy dialogue. a little dated in some areas, but holds up well.
Saw Deliverance for the first time. Anytime there was a banjo dual in a movie or tv show, I always wondered where that came from. seeing the rednecks made me feel uneasy. i liked the movie though. Solid B+.
The Prestige Amazing film. The atmosphere reminded me a bit of Insomnia and the pacing seemed reminiscent of Memento. Nolan knows how to craft a riveting story. My only complaint... Spoiler I was a little disappointed in the final trick Tesla created for Hugh Jackman. Up until that point, all the illusions had realistic answers to them, even Christian Bale's big reveal at the end. But I thought (for a movie clearly grounded in reality) it was a little far fetched to simply create a cloning device. Still, I don't know how else they would have been able to reach the conclusion. 8/10
Up In the Air 8/10 Well written and shot well. A very Clooney movie. Avatar 8/10 Landmark film visually. The scenes were breath-taking and the action was very entertaining. The plot was meh. Just barely good enough where it didn't take away from the visuals. Too cliche and preachy for my taste. I found myself cheering for the humans (is that bad?) It's Complicated 7/10 Would've been great if it was about 30-45 minutes shorter.
On Deliverance.. without a doubt one of the best directing and cinematography jobs I've seen. Boorman is at his best with Dickey's writing here. I watched The Deer Hunter for the umpteenth time last night. Deniro, Walken, and, Streep...... in the hands of Michael Cimino. John Cazale (Streep's fiancee' who was dying of cancer) is very good as Stan too. It's a film that always reaches me ........Yet it can switch from being so touching to an unmatched intensity ......Evidenced by one of my favorite scenes in cinematic history.......Russian Roullete in the hut. "Three bullets, we do three" It rolls as a 10.
when i first saw Deer Hunter, i was so annoyed by the long wedding scene. but the more i thought about it, it made me appreciate the chaos that would follow. that was a great movie.
I know. I mean where else could you have a 20 -25 minute wedding scene that worked ? Like you said, put in it's proper context ...It and other scenes really provide the contrast and help show what the Vietnam War did to this town and it's people.
Sin City 6/10 - Not sure about it. It was really well done and Alba of course is hot, and brittany murphy. I fell asleep about 3/4 of the way and had to pick up again the next day maybe thats why I'm only giving it a 6. I had trouble following it at times, maybe because I was tired. Glory 9/10 - Epic Movie Training Day 10/10 - In my top 5 of all time. Badass movie
Besides the wonderful choreography (that DOES go on for a long time), you have Walken asking Streep to marry him, the soldier at the bar who Deniro and gang messes with (foreshadowing) , and Cazale hitting his girlfriend . Plus there is the crosscurrent of Deniro being in love with Streep. I know I'm leaving out a lot, but it's chock full of stuff.
Avatar 7/10 I was expecting something else. Was a pretty conventional action movie with the politics laid on a bit too thick. No real great acting performances. But as far as action movies go, it was pretty darn cool.
Funny People 6/10. It had some funny parts, but the movie was way to long. Apatow should have cut a half hour out of it.
