Okay, we netflicked The Diving Bell and the Butterfly last night. And the verdict: ugh was that movie ever French. It's basically two hours of this: The guy is paralyzed (everything but his right eye) by a stroke. And though it's a true story, and it's a story of the human spirit surviving against a really depressing situation, it's still not entertaining to watch this guy blink once for yes and twice for no for two hours. All I could think of was the actor jutting out his "stroke lip" on the left side and moving his one eye around like crazy. It just didn't work at all. And then, even when you want to like him, at the end of the movie, he's still absolutely cruel to the mother of his three children (she's shown above), opting to show love only to his flaky, uncaring mistress, who looks like a tall boy and is an idiot who has to sleep with a blinking shrine to the virgin in her bedroom, ruining sex for the guy (back when he could have sex.) The only good thing about this movie is, not surprisingly, Max von Sydow. Here is Max, the guy's dad, getting shaved by the guy right before the stroke happens. Max is amazing and just takes the movie over for the 9 minutes he's in it. Okay, the other good thing is that, for some reason, a bunch of hot women dote on this guy after his stroke, so there are some scenes with hotties like these two moving his mouth around as part of physical therapy or whatever: But mainly you are watching this guy's stroke face for two hours and sometimes he drools. Rating: C-
Angels and Demons - 3/10 Terminator Salvation - 5/10 This movie had so much potential, and started out so well...then it pulled a Hancock on us
It shouldn't detract at all. It was a good movie. That it would have a strong effect on me is a feather in its cap.
Saw this last weekend with my wife and kids. We all loved it. Pretty good girl-power movie. Also reminded my wife and I how much we miss the Houston/East Texas/Louisiana area. I cannot believe it took Disney so long to incorporate an African-American princess to their lineup. That being said...I'm glad Disney didn't make a big deal about it and let the story and the characters exist on their own merits. That'll be another princess movie we'll be adding to our collection when it's released.
I finally saw Godfather and Godfather part 2. Meh. Godfather was okay, part 2 was great, but The Good, The Bad, The Ugly should be number 1 on IMDB's top 250 imo. I'll watch godfather part 3 tonight. Heard it is bad.
I saw Up in the Air last night and it was really good. Jason Reitman is quickly becoming one of my favorite directors (Thank You For Smoking, Juno) his talent as a writer along with great soundtracks make his movies very enjoyable. The performances were outstanding, especially Clooney and the young woman Anna Kendrick who were both superb. 9 out of 10.
Avatar: 8.5/10 Sherlock Holmes: 7/10 Monsters vs. Aliens 4/10 Wrestler: 9/10 Public Enemies 7/10 Drag Me To Hell: 8/10 Brothers Bloom: 5/10 Angels & Demons: 4/10
It Might Get Loud. 9/10 Page/Edge/White bios and seeing the joy in their faces as they watch each other play. Fantastic.
Avatar (88%) - See the Avatar thread if you really want my detailed thoughts. It wasn't as revolutionary as I hoped, but still a genuinely great movie experience. Up (85%) - Not my favorite Pixar effort, but even then, it's a very charming/touching/funny/enjoyable movie as usual.
Tell No One - 9/10 - very engaging french thriller/mystery...one of the best movies I've seen in quite some time.
Carriers 6/10 28 Days Later wannabe movie, follows 4 teenagers as they cross the post-outbreak America. Bad acting, coupled with no topless scenes = FAIL! Movie had so much potential.
Antichrist - inc. Made a mistake by trying to watch a serious movie when I wanted something stupid. As a result, I wasn't paying much attention. But it seemed pretty good. District 9 - 7/10. Not much to say. Worth watching. Dorian Gray -7/10. Watched it last night. There's something I didn't like and I'm not sure what. Drag Me To Hell - 6.5/10. This is what I should have watched instead of Antichrist. It was dumb but entertaining. 25th Hour - 8/10. Edward Norton is great. In The Name Of The Father - 6.5/10. A bit boring. The Last House On The Left (2009) - 6.5/10. Again, I was entertained. The ending was unnecessary. The Prestige - 8.5/10. Before watching I thought that this couldn't be good. But it was awesome! Bonus points for having Nikola Tesla. Zombieland - 5/10. Ok, explain how was this so well received on this board (and everywhere, judging from the rating on imdb)? Granted, I had high expectations but I thought it was mediocre in all aspects.
