did you watch the director's cut? it is a lot longer but much better than the theatrical version. I enjoyed the movie a lot personally (the directors cut that is) but felt that Orlando Bloom didnt command a big enough presence on the screen to play the lead Last movie I saw: Adventureland: 8/10 ---I thought this was going to be a comedy in the superbad type fashion from the trailers that I saw with Bill Hader's and Kristen Wiig's characters but it was far from that type of comedy. It certainly did have comedic moments but it was a "dramedy" for sure. I was actually very pleasantly surprised by the movie. It was quite good, though I felt that the lead male character's personality fit Michael Cera to a T.
I watched Waiting.. last night. Brilliant movie! Pretty much enjoyed every single minute. It reminded me of my days working for Little Ceasars. Also reminded me why I'm NEVER rude to waitstaff.
I finally saw Slumdog Millionaire this week. I was impressed with the story. It was original and it kept me interested and that Frieda Pinto is gorgeous.
Pineapple Express The best part was turning it off and having sex with the Brazilian girlie I was watching the movie with.
Slumdog Millionaire (95%) - I can definitely see why this got Best Picture. I'm sure there's not much I can say that hasn't been said. What a beautiful film.
Religulous (96%) - This whole documentary pretty much sums up my views on religion. Took the words right out of my mouth. The only reason I penalize it is because it obviously takes some liberties in the editing department to increase comedic effect. Much like interview on the Colbert Report, if you know what I mean. I could have done without that.
Come on, dude. This movie is not about cinematography. It's about obsession. It's like watching "Raging Bull" and commenting on the costumes.
Hamlet 2 (55%) - Written by the people who brought you irreverent gems like Team America: World Police, "Hamlet 2" is a billed as a no-holds barred assault on the easily offended. I thought it was actually pretty tame. The Story follows Dana Marschz, a washed up former actor who know is teaching high school drama in "****hole" Tucson, Arizona. In a last ditch effort to try and salvage his dreams and the school's arts program... He writes an unconventional sequel to Shakespeare's Hamlet which sparks a riotous, nonsensical response from the Tucson people. The problem with Hamlet 2 isn't the story itself, or even the performances. Dana Marschz is so much of a loser it makes it hard to even relate to him because he is seems too pathetic to be true. You almost want to see him continue to fail and get his various body parts crushed. The main problem, like with so many comedies is that as the story becomes so increasingly climactic, you begin to lose any semblance of a decent plot and instead you get suckered into watching another Hollywood fluff piece where the zero becomes a hero. There are some laughs to be had. Amy Poehler is charming as a rabid ACLU lawyer willing to duke it out with Tucson's higher-ups to make sure that human rights aren't being denied. Coogan's interactions with his class early on while trying to "reach" them are particularly funny. The musical number "Rock Me Sexy Jesus" is also very funny. Overall the movie shows some potential early on, but like 95% of comedies these days, fails to distinguish itself from the myriad of "lovable loser" flicks when the plot starts to thicken.
X-Men: Wolverine Origins (I r 1337! LOL!) I didn't even know this was coming out in May when I first "sampled" it. Nothing over the top, but a good movie explaining Wolverine's backstory/origins. From what I read on wikipedia (where everything is true anyway), it sounds like it didn't quit stay on cue with the comics but then again what comic book movie does 100%? That being said, Wolverine is a god damn badass and has been my favorite X-Men character for a while now so the movie alone, altered or not, is worth the price of admission for sure. 7.5/10
Taken - 4/5 This movie was mindless action fun. However it hooked me and the action scenes were brutal. Liam Neeson was a bad mother. Australia 2/5 It gets the 2 for the brilliant and incredible cinematography. However this movie was so long and drawn out. They could have easily made 3 different movies out of it. X-Men Origins: Wolverine 3.5/5 I never read the comics, but I enjoyed this movie.
Slumdog Millionaire - great flick, reminded me a lot of City of God but more uplifting. Both movies were great. I loved how the backstory was integrated with the game show questions.
Knowing: I really liked this movie. The direction is top notch; you can tell Alex Proyas directed this film; it has a definite Dark City vibe at times. The special effects are good until the end. And the disaster scenes are just about as intense as you can get. I don't think I've ever seen a plane crash filmed in such an immersive way; much like Castaway. The only downside for me was the end. It became too much of a literal interpretation of the Bible in some aspects and switched directions from an apocalyptic thriller to a sci-fi. Plus it seemed all the producers for the film decided it had to have a typical Hollywood happy ending. It would have been much more impactful if the writers decided to go a different way. 6.5/10 Would have given it an extra half point if not for the end.
Adventureland 9/10 Wow. This movie surprised the hell out of me. First of all, I loved that the lead was played by the love child of Michael Cera and Andy Samberg. For a lot of no-names, the acting was pretty solid. I was expecting a little more raunchy type, toilet humor, instead it felt like Dazed and Confused : 80s style. This might be the best movie I've seen in a theaters since last year.
