Yeah, after sucking for the Texans for 3 years.

    That was a disingenuous post.

Marvin Austin, Akeem Ayers, Brooks Reed, Justin Houston ( they wont take him because of the pot ...but he is a good player), Aaron Williams, and brandon Harris are all good options for us tommorow but i have a feeling the pick wont be any of them... I hope i'm wrong.

From what I read, Watt doens't have great pass rush speed

My favorite highlight clip of JJ Watt by far. Mostly because of the awesome music.

He technically didn't turn out to be a bust was my point.

Plus 6'5", 290 lbs with a great motor >>> 6'3", 260 pounder with an average motor.

Watt is being compared to Jared Allen but is actually bigger.

the problem is jared allen is a 4-3 end and we are a 3-4 team. Also we have mario and antonio smith playing those positions.

I wonder if they will play him some at NT.

Watt doesn't really have edge rushing speed, so I guess he makes sense for the 3-4.

It seems like Wade wants to use Mario at OLB a good amount. Scary thought, but if he's not asked to play a lot of coverage I'm fine with it. Watt allows him to do it. Should actually make for a decent run stopping front 7. Nickel situations he will most likely move Watt to NT, Mario to DE, and bring in a Mark Anderson or someone who is more of an outside rusher.

The problem for us anti JJ Watt guys is as follows.

1)The pick may not have been a reach but we feel better players were available. Like Fairley, Prince, and Quinn.

2)We already have two 3-4 DEs who are actually above average to very good players. So either one has to go or Watt is situational.

3)A player like Quinn could start right away at LB especially considering Demeco and Barwin are coming off injuries.

I have no problem with Watt, there was just IMO better talent available at positions of greater need. So why take a lesser talent at a position of lesser need?

Mario's adjustment will be interesting to watch, that's for sure.

I still think we should have just found a good 4-3 defensive coordinator, but whatever.

Can we just switch back to 4-3 and make everything better?

    Honestly, this is beyond ridiculous.

Peterson fell to 5th and we didn't move up for him.

The run on QB's left Fairley available........THIS is the guy I wanted if we couldn't/wouldn't move up for Patrick.

And Prince was there at a position of need. I could handle passing on him if we had jumped up into the late first round for Jimmy Smith...But no to that too.

Instead we grab the dairy fed Fightin Whitey combine workout warrior....J.J.Watt....

The sad thing is I'm not surprised ...... It's just so Texans....

Theater of the absurd .......I gave us a C and that's probably being generous.

"Relentless, high-motor", bats down passes, stout against the run, potential against the pass, one of the better 5-techs but needs a little bit of work (that's why coaching exists), has "violent hands" and knows how to use them, was projected to go right around where we picked, is being compared to Jared Allen apparently (according to fellow poster "sammy"), fans around the league have given the pick a 71% approval rating (A, B)...

And look at this little bit of info I stole from TT that compares his measurements with Mario's:

    MW:----------- Watt:
    ht - 6'7" ----------- 6'5"
    wt - 295 ------------ 290
    arm length - 33 1/8" ---------- 34"
    hand size - 10" ---------- 11 1/8"
    40 yd - 4.65s ---------- 4.84s
    10 yd split -1.80s ----------
    20 yd split - 2.77s----------
    20 ss - 4.37s ---------- 4.21s
    3 cone - 7.21s ----------- 6.88s
    vert - 40' 1/2" ------------ 34"
    broad - 10' ---------- 10'
    BP - 35 ---------- 34

And Texans fans are running amok yelling that this is a reach and an F. You also have to love the "First Round DL History" logic. Since we've had busts with DL before in the first draft (probably the only team to ever do that, too), that means this pick must also be a bad one?

I'm ready to get behind this pick because everything I have read about this guy from scouting reports and from other fans of NCAAFB has been nothing less than exemplary and favorable. If in a couple of years we see that he's yet another Texans bust, I'll come out and eat crow, but for now it seems to me that fans are going crazy not because they're actually upset about the pick, but because they're just used to flipping out at everything the Texans do, regardless of whether it's a good move or a bad one.

This makes me wonder about Mario Williams' future as a Texan. He doesnt really fit a 3-4 scheme and I wonder if they are looking to trade him for some defensive help. I'm pretty sure Mario would get us a pretty good haul. Interesting to see how the Texans handle this.

I'm not going to lie, I was really hoping the Texans would go for Quinn. That's the kind of upside that wins championships. That being said, Watt is still raw so he should improve with NFL coaching. The more I read about him the more I like the pick. Maybe his high energy level will rub off on Mario.

Sorry for the double-post, but the one complaint about this pick that I actually do feel is legitimate and worthy of being addressed is the notion that other and better options were available. This is quite possibly true, and I honestly am not enough of an armchair scout to say decidedly whether or not it is; but from what we do know, it seems that the Texans really loved Peterson and Alson Smith. Both were taken before we picked, and I'm going to presume that the Texans simply weren't able to make a trade-up. Seems to me that the Texans just went with what they thought their third best option was, and from what I've read, Watt doesn't seem to be a very bad third option to have.

It isn't a terrible pick, but better players were available. If the Texans were so in love with Watt I hope they at least explored trading down because he could of been had later in the round considering who was still on the board.
