Well... I think this helps out both teams. Hornets really get rid of Peja's large expiring... Get a veteran PG in Jack... A pretty good back up Center that can shoot in David Andersen. They're trying to surround Paul with big men that can shoot that mid-range shot. Bayless is a nice young PG for Toronto. They'll have opened up some CAP room for the summer with Peja's expiring.

Guess what. Dorsey has to be included for that deal to work. He'll be traded and cut by N.O. unless T.O. peddles him somewhere else.......hmmmm.

Interesting for Toronto. After this goes down, they will have over $20 million in expirings (Peja and Nutgrabber), plus a $12 million trade exception.

Are they gearing up to rent Melo?????

That would be really weird. No way Melo would stay there. No veteran superstar would stick around Toronto while they rebuild.

    Bottom line(s):

Jarrett Jack is definitely the best player involved. He's a great backup option for CP3 and can fill in when Belinelli's play eventually tails off.

Jerryd Bayless is very overrated by some here. He's athletic and that's about it. The guy just doesn't get NBA basketball. Does anyone actually want to explain why they think he is the best player in this trade? Consider there is a reason the Hornets are dumping him so quickly.

The Hornets are betting the farm on this season by giving up Peja's expiring contract for so little. I think their strong start is a mirage and they will regret this trade.

I think we agree on everything else but the last paragraph. I don't think their strong start is a mirage nor will they regret the trade. Yeah giving up Peja's expiring contract right now is a headscratcher but I trust what Dell Demps and Monty Williams are doing.

One angle that I have not heard anyone bring up yet is that Jack was originally drafted by the Blazers and him and Monty have a history together which may be one of the factors that helped the deal get done.

I'm always cautious when teams unexpectedly explode out of the gate. Every year one or two teams will do this and they come back down to earth. When the Hornets hit some serious adversity, fight through it and continue winning, I might jump on board. At this point, my prediction is they will not be a top 4 seed at the end of the season even after this trade.

Good trade for the Raptors. Jack was a bad fit in Toronto partly cause he was a ball hog, this gives the start to Calderon. And Jose runs that offense way better than Jack. Peja is starting out strong coming back from his injury. Should be interesting to watch. I actually enjoy watch Toronto, one of my favorite teams from the east.

all about saving money for the Hornets and keeping Paul happy. In Jack, they are getting one of CP3's best friends. Bayless also was not fitting in with the guys off of the court. I would say that's a quick assessment though but they were able to flip him for a guy they think will keep Paul happy for a bit.

Toronto gets a big expiring contract and still a high ceiling guard. Perhaps he will continue to mature and reach his near full potential in Toronto.

Each team gets what they wanted so I can't knock either side.

Bayless did have his moments last season but is still raw. He's even below the Sebastian Telfair development route, thats not saying much. Besides appeasing Chris Paul by getting one of his buddies, I think there's a reason they got Jarret Jack.

'08 Blazers is definitely a team starting out "blazing" hot that barely finished at .500 to end the year. Probably best to temper expectations rather than thinking you're a 60 win ball club. You have to think the Hornets coulda had a Jarret Jack type move at the trade deadline at LEAST, so why do that now. Maybe the Hornets know they will eventually will tail off and prefer to bolster their position now, rather than having to RELY on a big trade deadline move to rejuvenate a dead team.

Still, I don't know all the trading rules but IF the Hornets are able to flip the players they got, Marcus Banks is an expiring contract and I think David Andersen is too (team option for next year). So the Hornets basically traded away half of Peja to get Jarret Jack and still have half the expirings left, which is still around $7 mil for the trade deadline.

(Lots of Blazer ties here. Monty Williams, Jack, Bayless, Telfair, reference to '08 team )

I don't get why people think the Raps won this trade.

Expirings aren't an asset by themselves, they are only useful if there is a team out there desperate to clear salary. If no one wants to give you anything for them the expiring is just an overpaid player. Sure Peja is indeed an expiring, however at the same time you'd be getting a player who plays like crap but makes a ton of money for this year.

JJ is a nice, tough pg who can backup CP3. David Andersen gives the team a player who's similar to David West, except this time he's a legit 7 footer. With CP3 instead of Brooks making plays for him watch Andersen blossom in the same way that Okafor and Tyson Chandler did.

The Hornet's 10-1 record is fool's gold and won't translate in the playoffs. This trade further shores up their roster. Good trade for them IMHO.

this is all the hornets could get for a large expiring contract and bayless?

something tells me they could've got more for peja's contract at the deadline.

A3Po, the Hornets are at 10-1. Don't know how we can view that as a fluke. I don't see them going down significantly as long as Paul is healthy. He is that good. They understand that and they are seizing the moment. They will have $16 million in expiring contracts plus a $5.7 million TPE plus some young talent to use in a trade to bring in even more help for Paul. They become players to swallow Iggy/Brand at the deadline to add to they may consider such a deal if it is on the table and they are still at the top of the Conference standings.

I don't see what's so hard to understand. During the course of a season, each and every team will have hot streaks where they play over their heads. The Hornets just happen to be doing it early.

If they continue near the top of the West, I'll be happy to eat crow later. They don't need Brand but Iggy would definitely help them.

Not all hot streaks are the same. Obviously, no team can keep up a torrid 10-1 win record, so the Hornets will come down eventually. But a win streak built on defense is a much better indicator of success than one built on hot shooting. They've won all their games with solid play and could have won in Dallas, too.

The Hornets are not scoring all that much. They're only 18th in PPG and 24th in pace. However, they are shutting teams down. They have the 3rd best defense in the league and have solid defenders starting at four different positions. Ariza is shooting horribly, but he's a huge difference-maker defensively (it pains me to say that). Everyone seems to be playing within their capabilities so far.

If they were scoring 110 PPG, like the Spurs, I would be agreeing with you. But it looks like they're for real. Iggy would obviously help them, but I'm not surprised they went for immediate help at backup PG.
