What you said. And I'm proud to live in a neighborhood with enough organization and clout to stop Wal-Mart from building a gigantic superstore close to us. That is next to impossible, it seems, but we did it.

Wal-Mart is ruining small business, and has been for years. Most of their stuff is from China, not the US, like they used to claim in their ads. They are the Sovietization of American retail. Shop local small businesses and stay away from Wal-Mart.

That is amazing.. No one has ever stopped Wal-Mart.. NO ONE!!!

I grew up in a small east Texas town.. population around 3,000.. we've always had a Walmart.. but recently they closed it down, and literally a half mile down the road built a SUPER Walmart.. how does a town like that need a 24 hour store the size of a football field?

Not only that, but in the town next door.. another small town (a little bit bigger, population 7-8k).. they did the SAME thing.. It is getting ridiculous.

I bet walmart's next move is going to be incorporating movie theatres into their stores..

    good post asw!

I think you're right on the money however annoying the receipt thing is.

I've worked retail since I was able to work, over 20 years!

My last job was at the corporate level for a retailer.
I got squeezed out of a situation like the pee-on they hired me to be and you're right.... its all about the profit and keeping the shareholders happy....OH, the BIG shareholders mind you, not the pee-on employee shareholders that buy stock a few dollars at a time out of their paychecks.

When the big boys speak, everyone jumps and asks how high?
    Believe me.....its gross.

    gnite.:)

I checked all receipts at the local K-Mart for the last 2 months it was open, If you ran a big company and saw how many idiots tried to steal from us in broad daylight you would check receipts too.

I got many dirty looks, irritated people just shoving their receipts at me and storming out the door, and a lot of people wanting to know why we had do to it. I tried to be as polite as I could, and explain I was only following orders.

There people who are checking your receipts are doing what the Managers need them to do, because they know that theft increases during high traffic times (Holiday Sales, Closing Sales) And if we check 1 person's receipt we have to check them all. They are not targeting you and harrassing you, unless you are trying to steal something you have no reason to be b****ing when all they are asking you to do is verify your purchases. However, I do think they should put up some sort of warnings or have the cashiers tell customers to keep their receipts out (Like we did).

The next step for walmart is the self contained community. The development will be anchored by a superwalmart, you can live and shop there and never have to leave your 'community'. Maybe like a high-rise with a walmart, or a gated community with a walmart near the neighborhood or a u-shaped group of apartments that surround the walmart?

Fry's practice has annoyed me for years. I mean you are steps from where they just took your money...

One reporter refused to show the receipt and they backed-down. Apparently, they can not force you to (at least in California).

    a) i'm actually surprised drapg doesn't hate receipt checking.

    b) i'm not surprised that Deckard is anti-Walmart and that he lives in a nieghborhood that is.

    c)
Wal-Mart opens? i thought they were all 24 hours.

    d) Walmart=Greatness. 24 hours, low-priced stuff, everything under the sun under one roof. greatness i tell you.

    e) and you're right.... its all about the profit and keeping the shareholders happy

what else would a business be about?

Thats just a bunch of bullsh!t.
Its about the shareholders and noone else is more important. PERIOD!

Yeah! Down with the man! I hate companies, too!

Wal-mart saves millions of Americans millions of dollars per year through lower cost goods than the competition. I welcome Wal-mart and the increased standard of living we enjoy because of them.

Sorry they "ruined" your pyramids in Mexico. I've been there myself and enjoyed them. However, the people who live there actually wanted the Wal-Mart. They claimed they wanted "progress and development". Exactly zero protesters were there when it opened its doors, yet hundreds waited hours for it to open so they could shop. The other businesses in the area were probably the ones protesting the thing. It's not like the area around Teotihuacan isn't already developed there. Read this link on the opening of the store. http://abcnews.go.com/Business/wireStory?id=228205

We recently had a "Super" Wal-Mart open in Crosby and I can honestly say that I will never step foot in it. The small business community that has supported the small town needs will probably see a reduction in shoppers and thus be forced to evaluate the need to be open. I would much rather support my neighbors who have businesses in town and who actually care about service and integrity.

Who excactly is Wal-Mart putting out of business in Crosby? Wal-Mart has always been the place to shop in that town, and the only store I could see it possibly hurting is that grocery store--I can't remember it's name...used to be Jay's--but it sucks anyway.

Didn't they build the Super Wal-Mart where that orchard used to be? That's what I would be mad about.

We have a Locally owned Ace Hardware that has lost alot of business, and the owner happens to be my neighbor. Wal Mart had a much smaller store before the new "Super" Wal Mart was built. The bigger store has a much bigger selection then the smaller store ever had. The "Super" Wal mart also has a Eye clinic/Optical store, a hair salon a McDonalds and a grocery store to name a few. I can imagine that the LOCALLY owned businesses that do the exact same thing will suffer. people are drawn to that friggin place like a moth to a flame ;)

    I freakin' LOVE Wal-Mart.

I love to save money, and I don't care if small businesses who would charge me more are losing out in competition.

My business goes to whomever charges me the least. Period.

Agreed. If you know it's coming, just have the receipt out and ready. And as far as having to put your bags on the floor, use a cart.

The checking the receipt is just a low cost, low effort prevention measure. I'm sure it saves the companies that do it a lot money. You just put some old geezer making minimum wage out there, he's a part time employee so you don't even pay him benefits and he's probably so myopic he can't really read the no ink receipt anyway. But it makes the casual shoplifter stop and think.

Here's what I don't understand, why don't retail stores check a driver's license with every credit card transaction? How many billions of dollars of credit card theft a year would ithat stop?
Uh yea, it's my cousin's card, he said I could use it....Sorry, credit transactions can only be made by the card holder. Bingo, billions saved!

I'm guessing the retail companies want to move the merchandise, and the credit card companies see it as a cost of doing business.
They pay for it by jacking up their fees to the retailers, who pay for it by jacking up the prices to the consumer so there is no incentive for either of them to require it.

We need some populist politician to take up this cause.
