Well, it looks like I'm gonna get layed off. I just found out today. It hasn't sunk it yet, but I'm starting to get p.o.ed.

They haven't made any lay offs yet but, I have a high risk of termination, if the current over staffing holds up until April of '09.

That's very upsetting. I will write more about it once it sinks in a bit more.

You are in the Semi biz right?

I suspect you didn't ride the ship in around 2001, 02. Semi's nature is cyclic.

    Man, sorry to hear that.

But you never know. If you don't get axed this time, start planning on fxxk the company before it does to you.

I know. I mean what the heck do they expect me to do now. They expect me to work for them still, knowing that I'll be one of the first out the door?

Oh, I meant OP is in the semi-conductor related industry, because I think he has an EE background.

Semi is the worst business to be in, because of the cyclical nature. I have seen enough, and quit it 4 years ago and went to law school.

Why do you think you are high risk. I don't think management ever talks about who's getting cut until it actually happens. Usually they stat with people making twice as much but replaceable.

I thought I was getting cut too back in 2001. But guess what I survived like 7 rounds of cut before I finally cut the company.

    Stay positive.

I have a EE degree too. But I'm in the aerospace industry. But the company I work for appearantly has lost several contracts that they were negotiating. But he upsetting part is that last year they hired a lot of people (me included) thinking that they'll win those negotiations. But now they are severely over staffed caused they lost those contracts.

I've only been working there for 4 months. That is the reason they've decided to give me the high risk status. Cause I've been here for such a short time.

Damn it. This sux, I wish I could do something about it.

I know because they told me in person during a 1 on 1 meeting. See I think the company is really smart. Becuase by doing this, they don't have to worry about any law suite cases (I'm not sure, you're the law major) later on, since they told us who is expected to get axed.

If there is a bet, I bet $20 on you will be safe.

They don't cut people they just hire, especially college kids within a year. That will be a waste of a lot of overhead cost. I survived my first two rounds because of that status.

You are there to replace those who make twice as much as you do, but fail to move up higher.

    Are you in L.A. ?

Just remember you have options not to take the severance package and keep the rights to sue them. Keep quite during the exit meeting if it does happen. You don't have to be angry or polite. Pay attention to what they say to you.

    Yes I'm in L.A.

They said that they looked at four criteria in order to decide who is in the high risk catagory. These were 1) Performance Review 2) Skill set (ie job title) 3) Level of clearance 4) Years of service.

Out of those four, 1) I don't have performance review cause I've been there for only 4 months. and 2) I don't have any year of service/seniority.

So I'm pretty sure that they do mean it that I am at high risk = definite lay off once April comes. To be fair they have given me the option to go to other secters nearby by telling me about other openings (they are not definite transfers, I still have to interview). But the closes one is in some desert town, 40 miles farther, which doesn't makes sense.

What upsets me the most is that I pretty much waisted the entire 1st year out of college, since I needed to wait 'till my clearance arrive to start working (it took ~9 months). And now after a short stay, I'm out of there and have to start over? Also I didn't even get to work with or interact with the upper management during this time. So they barely even knew my name when they had to make a decision. And I consider my self pretty valuable.

    [/rant] for now...

    Oh, too bad.

If there is a positive thing about it, they did you a service by letting you go in just 4 months, not like 4, 14 years into the job. You won't miss them, trust me.

You pay close attention to things like race, age, sex as possible reasons they let you go. Keep cool during the exit meeting, take notes of everything said in the meeting.

Oh, do you work close to LAX, like El Segundo by any chance. I think I have a pretty good idea which company you are working for.

Tomorrow is the day we find out if our parent company (one that's been in the news a lot lately and has 3 letters) is going to sell us or not. Pretty sure we will be on the list. I read an article that said there are already 3 foreign companies that are interested.

Just updated my resume and applied to a couple of other companies. NOT financials.....

Tomorrow should be an interesting day.....

I just found out they are hiring two girls to replace them in sjc. This company is just so shady. I definitely want to get out of the semi industry.

Will do. Actually there could be something behind that rece/nationality aspect. Because not a lot of (if any) people who were born in the foreign country that I was born in, are working at these certain companies. I woun't name any names, but there could be some kind of discrimination specially in this industry. Even though I am a naturalized US citizen, but was born in a not so friendly foreign country. I'm not saying that is the sole reason they are doing this to me. But I haven't seen anyone of my "initial" nationality working there.

So can I take notes during the exit meeting? How else do I take note of what is said?

Yes close to LAX. But I'd rather stay away from specifics. There are several companies there.
