I know he didn't mind MMs version cause it helped pay the rent in his lean years, but I stand by what I said earlier....MMs version of "Blinded By The Light" sucks orangutan balls. I immediately change channels whenever I hear it on the radio.
Covers that cross genres can be cool. Barenaked Ladies did a cover of Public Enemy's Fight the Power that was funny because it highlights how damn white BNL is. Similar comic value came from Rolf Harris doing Bohemian Rhapsody. Right now, I'm listening to Dylan done reggae-style.
Madonna's cover of American Pie gets my vote for worst cover ever.... I don't even think she was trying to make the song "hers" or "good" she was just trying to piss people off.... congrats! also, every time my dad and I hear "Turn The Page" cover by Metallica we argue over it.... I'm afraid he's just old I've also always liked Manson's covers of "Sweet Dreams" and "Tainted Love" The originals are better but it's an interesting take on them both
for every amazing cover like all along the watchtower there are a hundred crap ones like korn's the wall. i love covers, particularly live, but when bands have nothing left and release some crap for money i don't have any respect for it. not that i had any for korn to begin with.
I was just listening to the radio and I heard a cover of "Come Together" by the Beatles, think it was Aerosmith doing it, it was alright.
The worst was that MP3 player ad they used to play on tv. Who was that, diana ross or something? The Walk this way ad. Man, that was torture to watch.
Blinded by the light Wrapped up like a douche, a nutter rumble in the night How can you not love lyrics like that?
It's from Sgt. Peppers The Movie. That movie that the Bee Gee's made that everyone hates but I LOVE. But that's another thread...
I used to think it was the worst cover ever... but then I heard, what was it, Sheryl Crow doing "Sweet Child O' Mine". Now there are two worst covers ever. I don't mind the concept of covers, just make sure you do something decent with it. We can probably all think of some covers that are great. In fact, a lot of songs that I grew up with were covers of older ones. I didn't hear the originals until later and never actually liked them as much. Worst Cover Honorable Mention: Counting Crows - Big Yellow Taxi Inoffensive but Unmemorable: Uncle Kracker - Drift Away
I actually thought that 311 did a fairly good job in covering "Love Song" by The Cure. However, one day when listening to the radio (one of those rare times), they finished playing that song and the female DJ gets on the air and goes: "That was 311 with 'Love Song'. I believe that is a cover of a song but I cannot remember who sang the original." I thought I was going to swerve off the road and wreck when I heard that...kids - pfft. Some of the worst covers I have heard: "It's my Life" - No Doubt (absolutely ruined a great one hit wonder '80s band shining moment in Real Talk) "Total Eclipse of the Heart" - Nikki French (Jim Steinman songs are not meant to be turned into house or rave tunes - sorry.)
Clearly in the minority, but I can think of a few covers I actually like: Ugly Kid Joe - Cats in the Cradle No Doubt- Its My Life
Pretty good covers IMO: "Love Song" 311 "I'm Free" Soup Dragons "More Than This" Norah Jones "Time After Time" Rob Thomas
Hell freaking yes! If you are going to do Joni Mitchell, you better do it really, REALLY well. I heard kd lang do a cover of Help Me that was amazing, but she can do it. Why the hell they EVER thought doing Big Yellow Taxi would be a good idea is completely beyond me.
