If I had put that one in, then I guess Shine would be another. I think the top 10 movies that I was looking at are as follows: This is Spinal tap. Somehow I knew no film would challenge this one. The Buddy Holly Story La Bamba Coal Miner's Daughter The Blues Brothers The Commitments Almost Famous The Doors The Five Heartbeats Eddie and the Cruisers These are the cream of the crop for me.
Really? I honestly don't see the greatness in Purple Rain beyond the music itself. If you think it is greater than La Bamba, I won't disagree with you. I just think La Bamba was has more substance. This is just me, but I found the plot of Purple Rain confusing and not very well developed. I really didn't "see" the movie so to speak.
It's all about Richie, But what about me???? hmmmm, there was this film in the mid 90s with liv tyler... I cant recall the title but it was pretty good.
The music is everything. It's the performances that were incredible. Prince was the show. The cultural impact of the movie should be included when determining it's greatness. And is La Bamba / Eddie and the Cruisers better than Ray or Walk the Line? I guess I need to watch those again.
A Hard Days Night Don't Look Back Baby Snakes Woodstock The Last Waltz The Kids Are Alright The Filth and the Fury
Selena is pretty good, too. I live in Memphis and I didn't pick Walk the Line, hahaha. Ray is great I'm told. All of them are contenders for the 10th spot on the list, but I am not sure which movie I would take off. I think the Buddy Holly story is much like Ray and Walk the Line, Great Balls of Fire, in that a lot of the greatness of these films are in the performance of the lead characters. It is hard to separate them. I see La Bamba as a step above them. Lou Diamond Phillips was tremendous in that role.
Whenever the movie Great Balls of Fire is mentioned I always think of the titty grab scene in the living room. WTF were they thinking
I agree with this list. But would add.. The Doors Sid and Nancy La bamba Blues Brothers Elvis Walk the Line Janis Joplin and the Big brother co. (forget the actual title of it)
I didn't include A Hard Days Night and the others were because they really aren't movies per se. The same goes for The Wall. The criteria I used was two fold: they have to be tradional type movies. They have to be about a band or artist. Then you have to limit yourself to 10. It is very hard when you consider how many great movies about bands there have been. That is also why I left Purple Rain off of the list, because it is more Hard Days Night than it is Spinal Tap or La Bamba. It is more interested in presenting Prince the troubled musician than it is about who prince really is.
