I HAD to get a culligan whole house filter. We are at the end of the water line inside culdasac. I believe we have the medalist which regenerates itself after so many days. Blue crystal clear water now, culligan has good systems.
Fridge Filter This would be a good start to reduce the cost of the fridge filters. I went to this setup after the plastic bracket inside the LG fridge deformed. Getting a new one was going to be difficult because the part was being discontinued and LG was only going to give a 90 day warranty. Also the better filter was pricey. Had this installed behind the fridge: http://www.amazon.com/Watts-5YR-Premier-Filter-Maker/dp/B000E77I0Y/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1452111087&sr=8-2&keywords=inline+water+filter Less expensive than using the LG filters and probably work just as well at filtering.
Of course, your primary decision depends on how good your original water source starts out. Where we live (Taylor/Round Rock/Pflugeville) the water source is full of minerals and all sorts of yuk. I can't swear to the veracity of the claim, but whole home filtering should help preserve the life of your hot water heater. I had a plumber tell me that over the years your hot water heater fills up with quite a bit of pure sediment. We have whole home filtering, plus the reverse osmosis under the sink. Replacing the filters is an expense that has been worth it.
