I have NO respect for people that give others crap like she did.. If she didn’t like the smoking because she was outside and it bothered her and asks politely to stop smoking that's different, but as soon as she says something like she did the gloves come off..

 

Fat Chick: That's bad for you.
Smoker: I want to make sweet sweet love to your undulating waves of special FX padding, I want to put my big bone in your big-boned body, there is nothing that would please me more than spanking that ass and setting off seismic tremors that would finally destroy Tokyo once and for all. Smoker: Cool...can I set my ashtray on your butt during the ruckus? I need to be smoking, because you're so hot. You're not just the lava, you're the Vesuvius, and I want to be like Pliny the Elder forecasting destruction from a boat in the Mediterranean as your molten magma scorches the vacation resorts below.

Smoker: Do you want a Twinkie?

Smoker: tosses Twinkie on the ground and runs away

truth is, alot of people care what random strangers think of them...even yourself. and it's on all kinds of levels, from your job to your family to the car you drive to the women/men you date. we all want to be socially acceptable and that means caring what others think, even if it's on an unconscious level.

with that said, it's none of her business if you smoke.

OS' story reminds me of one of my own. I went into a Pier 1 with my daughter who was perhaps 2 months old at the time. At this point, she can hold her own head up, but it didn't matter because she was resting it on my shoulder. Everyone's going gaga over her because she's so adorable and all. One of the employees there asks me to support her head. I tell him she's fine. He insists. I want to cuss him out at this point, but I'm there with the in-laws so I refrain from saying anything and just turn away. Not a great way to get business though, doubting the parenting skills of your patrons.

I think you did the right thing by ignoring her. It is easy for me to say that something like that wouldn't have bothered me, but I think I would feel differently if it was ACTUALLY said to me personally.

I can't really think of anything like that but I do remember one time when I was in high school, some stranger came up to me and started talking to me like we were old friends. It turned out they thought I was someone else - the only time that has happened to me.
