i heard the portions are a)small and b)pricey. it definitely isn't your traditional bbq joint, so i dont think you can judge it on the same merits. but who knows...
bellaire broiler burger - corner bissonet fish market - fountainview between westheimer & richmond tofu village - korean restaurant on bellaire & corporate
Haven't been there either, but the wife says it's good. When is somebody going to open a high end, up-scale Vietnamese place in Houston. Don't get me wrong.......I love Pho and Banh mi as much as the next guy, but I could sure go for something like the Slanted Door or Monsoon right here in Houston.
EVERYTHING was awesome at both place, but there were a few standouts that haunt my memories: At the slanted door, the manilla clams with pork belly and an off the menu special of a raw (live, actually) scallop crudo, sliced thin, served in the shell with a drizzle of olive oil and some lemon juice along with a sprinkling of some fish roe. Sounds simple, but boy was it good! It's been a few years since I've been there, and I know the place gets a few poor reviews out there now, but I can't tell if the quality has actually declined or if it is just pretensious haters doing the dissing. Most of the haters b**** about the place being "fusion" rather than authentic. To hell with them. I like authentic Vietnamese as well, but that place was just plain great. Monsoon was even better, but I've only been there once. I HAVE to go back. We went for dim sum on a Sunday (they call it dim sum, but it is really just smaller brunch size portions that they do on Sundays). Everything we had was just better renditions of things we've had before. I even had a bowl of pho that was just stunning. I'd put it on par with David Chang's places in NYC. But the thing I remember most was my wife's dessert. I didn't order any thinking I was full and that Asian's aren't always known for pleasing me with dessert.......serves me right for being close minded! Fortunately my wife shared and I actually got to eat half of hers. Best dessert I've ever had, and it sounds so inncucous: banana cake with savory coconut sauce. I've got to get myself back to Seattle.
man, a bowl of pho that "was just stunning" ... i bet was a stunning broth. I can only imagine. I've never had high-end Vietnamese. Now I want to go Seattle. You're right...we should have high-end Vietnamese in Houston (I say that like I still live there...sigh). Boulder is very lacking in restaurants....sigh
sorry, i got caught up in restaurant suggestions to think of what you asked for - everyday kind of food... for houston, i like empire cafe on westheimer and the hobbit cafe on richmond. fair prices for good comfort food... something i miss terribly about austin java co., p. terry's burgers, and flip-happy crepes in austin.
Damian's. I was there last Saturday night. Food is as great as ever. Easily one of the top 3 Italian restaurants in Houston.
all of this is true. The food is ok but portions are small and it isn't really a BBQ joint because you can only get ribs Thursday for lunch or at dinner time.
Beaver's is awful. And way expensive for what you get. $7.50 for a Hennepin? $10 for a glass of house Pinot Grigio? $16 for a small dried-up barbecue plate??
Bubba's Burger Shack under Westpark tollway. Great burgers. I wish they served fries though... no room for the fryer.
Agreed. Monica's a great chef, but the minute I read about Beaver's, I thought "what the hell does she know about bbq? This is just weird.". Hoped I was wrong, but nope.
there are a few of these, 290 and 43rd is my favorite, I've been to the one on bellaire also, its the same quality but they only had hot tea
Damian's, Brennan's, Mia Bella, Ruggles... or Churrasco's, Melting Pot, Zio's or Katz Deli that's all I got...
