Yes. In theory you could trade Asik for Bynum, then waive Bynum in July and get his entire $12M off the salary cap.

So it would be like erasing all of Asik's entire cap hit + getting half a season of Bynum as your back up Center, on top of what other assets we get in the trade (like Waiters and picks).

The only thing Bynum is good for is cap relief or trade flexibility for another player. He has no value as an actual player. One thing that could possibly be done with him would be if Cleveland traded him now, another team could negotiate a $7 million buyout in order to carry Bynum until the trade deadline to flip elsewhere.

He'll have value as a player for teams where he wants to be. Maybe Dallas. Market won't be big.

    Idea A:
    Houston gets: Ilyasova
    Cleveland gets: Asik
Milwaukee gets: Bynum (whom they cut before January 7 to save money) + one or two of Cleveland's picks.

    Idea B:
Houston gets: Shawn Marion + Dallas' pick
Dallas gets: Bynum (whom they'll keep for this year at least)
    Cleveland gets: Asik

Included in the Omer trade, we should get bench assets and picks. Move Garcia to 3rd bench with Brooks for Vet experience, and get scoring SG/SF and maybe a backup center and picks.

    Bulls:
    * Brewer, Mack, & Scott all have fully unguaranteed deals. Cutting them gets the Bulls under the tax.
    * Bulls can choose to pay 8M tax, lose a share in tax revenue, but then there's more to come. They'll get hit with the repeater tax next year or the one following if they're due to pay again during those two seasons. They'll also be restricted to the tax payer's MLE.

    Rockets:
    * Schroeder's 20 years old, has high upside/value. As good as a first round pick.
    * Look at Brand's game logs from this season and last. He is still very productive. Good insurance at the PF spot should Jones hit the wall at the end of the season/playoffs. Maybe even sooner on some nights when the Rockets need more defensive rebounds.

    * The Chron claimed Dunleavy was Morey's no.1 free agent target after signing Howard.

Short term gains, the Rockets address perimeter defense, shooting, and depth at PF. All these vets do not have contracts that eat into 2015 free agency.

    Come July 1st, 2014...
If either Aldridge or Love tell their respective teams that they're not re-signing.

Surely a package of Deng (sign & trade), Schroeder, Jones, Motiejunas, & future picks will be hard to beat?

Dirk could also be an option in free agency in 2014.

For the purpose of pursuing a trade for a 2015 free agent (Kevin Love, Aldridge, etc.), having contracts, like Deng's, expiring in summer 2014 is actually not very convenient.

First, the guy can just leave for a destination he wants to go to instead of participating in your sign and trade.

Second, guys like these would most likely get offered long term contracts and we don't know whether a team with your desired trade target would want them at that price.

Third, the team with your desired target may not want to give up on the guy until the very last moment-- i.e. trade deadline 2015. But by summer 2014 you have to make a decision on whether to let your own 2014 free agent go and hold on to your cap room until February 2015 (and weakening your team until at least February 2015, if not longer) or re-sign your 2014 free agent (or sign another 2014 free agent) to what is likely to be a multi-year deal which your potential trade partner may or may not want to take on.

Thus, if you are trading away Asik and Lin for expiring contracts because you want to have potential cap room in 2014 after you renounce your own free agents, you better have a 2014 free agent that you want to pursue and know that you can likely get rather than counting on landing a 2015 free agent via trade.

    Sign me up.

I liked Tristan Thompson way back when, but Terrace Jones gives us what he'll bring us. Not a big Fan of Waiters Defense and inconsistency, If we get Bynum i'll settle for a CJ Miles, or Alonzo Gee picks and the corspe of Bynum, Then Cut Bynum at the end of the year. I'll love that trade. Morey did the right thing by waiting

I just feel the Rockets need to somehow fast track that big trade a year earlier.

Too many teams, around half the league in 2015, will have at least 10M+ of cap space to throw around.

Instead of a waiting game. It may well turn out to be the crying game. No third star and Parsons signing elsewhere as an unrestricted free agent.

Apparently Josh Smith and the Pistons coach aren't getting along

    http://www.mlive.com/pistons/index.ssf/2013/12/maurice_cheeks_vs_josh_smith_p.html

He was benched for the entire 2nd half last night for not "playing hard" for the 2nd time this season. They'd probably be willing to part with him.

A 3 team deal with Detroit and Boston with Asik going to the Celtics Green going to Detroit and us getting Smith might work if we throw in D-mo, Casspi, or Brewer and a pick. A lot of people here don't like Smith, but he can play the 3 in certain lineups and is a solid perimeter and post defender and could be our "3rd star"

Rockets out: Asik, DMo, Smith, Brewer
Rockets in: Tristan Thompson, Zeller, Birdman, Beasley

Cavs out: Tristan Thompson, Zeller, Bynum
Cavs in: Asik, DMo, Smith, Haslem, Joel Anthony

Miami out: Joel Anthony, Haslem, Birdman, Beasley
    Miami in: Bynum, Brewer

Rockets get a backup C, upgrade the backup PF and SF spots. Gives us a couple of win now players and a couple of 1st round prospects...all on smaller, easier to move if needed contracts.

Cavs dump Bynum pickup a new starting C and some young PF projects for Zeller and Thompson...a small price to pay.

Miami gets a huge upgrade at C...a true C...which allows them to move Bosh to PF. That gives them a lineup of Bynum, Bosh, Lebron, Wade and Chalmers for the cost of Beasley, Birdman and scraps.

That's an interesting idea. It could work.

It's funny, the Celtics got Green for a defense-only center with a bum knee and now they'd trade him away for a defense-only center with a bum knee.

I think Asik's knee would have to be perfect.

I like the three way idea btw Boston/Det/Houston.

The big issue with Smith on our team is getting him to dial down the offensive stupidity. He is a very good player on both sides of the ball if he doesn't chuck like the wood chuck chucks.

Smith would make us a better defensive team. A rotation of Howard/Josh Smith and Terrence Jones is scary on the shot blocking.

That's a bunch of bad contracts going to Cleveland. They add like 12 mil for next year, scrap their free agency plans, give up Thompson and Zeller, and very possibly help LeBron win another title in Miami. I don't see that happening.

    Very interesting, hooroo.

We would essentially be swapping one rotation player for possibly three. Deng would obviously be out there and Dunleavy has played a lot of minutes at SG this year. Definitely an upgrade to Garcia. Brand might steal some backup C minutes against slower teams, also.

    Well done.

Honestly, with Asik's mysterious knee injury, the sooner we deal him the better. I highly doubt whatever is ailing him is serious enough to prevent him from passing a physical [knock on wood].

Miami will have no bench. And personally I don't see Bynum lasting much longer in the nba because of health and size. Miami is worse off IMO for a 7 game series.

We all know the Cavs owner is delusional but if he really thinks he can get Lebron to leave what's in Miami for some more craptistic years on the Cavs, then someone ought to get him under personal watch ASAP. Letting Bynum walk for nothing is going to make them worse. What star is going to want to pe a part of that? Even Bynum doesn't want to play for them anymore.

He's getting a center...a starting center. Good ones don't come along every day. Drafting them is even harder. Also adding a 7' prospect in DMo. Greg's contract is expiring and the rest expire next year even if Haslem and Joel pick up their options. So they will still have cash for 2015 FAs. They need a team so that FAs might actually want to play for them because if they don't do something soon, then there are just too many teams with cash for even wasting time for a visit to Cleveland.
