    Tracy McGrady Trade Rumor.....idea?

But let’s have a bit of fun with ESPN’s Trade Machine for a minute anyway and imagine what Tracy McGrady would look like in purple and orange. Here’s my cap-satisfying proposal: Jason Richardson and Leandro Barbosa to Houston for Tracy McGrady and Chase Budinger.

    Why this works

There are a number of reasons this won’t work, but let’s start off by discussing why it does.

If T-Mac is healthy (a HUGE if), he gives the Suns a potent three-star lineup of Nash-Amare-McGrady, the kind of star-studded lineup that can really compete in the West. At full strength he’s a sizable improvement over J-Rich.

You all know I love Chase, and I would love to cover him again, but that’s not why I’m proposing this deal. The Suns would need another player to fill out the roster anyway and they’d need some wing depth if they trade both of their shooting guards and then plan on relying on the creaky McGrady. As I wrote around draft time, Chase would be a great fit in this system, and Suns GM and fellow Wildcat Steve Kerr is very familiar with his game.

The biggest boon, though, would be on the books. By acquiring McGrady’s league-high $23 million expiring contract, the Suns would essentially be paying Nash and guys on their rookie contracts entering the Summer of 2010. Even if Hill and Frye re-up, the Suns would only have about $25 million worth of commitments minus Amare. That would give them roughly $30 mil to spend in free agency, which could mean Amare and a really nice piece (maybe Joe Johnson all over again?) or even a shot at the jewels of the class.

People ask me all the time about the Suns’ future and my answer is this: it doesn’t look championship bright. At best you have Amare leading the Suns’ current crop of young guns. Sounds like a nice team, but not a championship contender. Taking one step back in a move like this would give Phoenix the flexibility to re-tool for one last run under Nash while building for the future after he retires, kind of how taking one step back with the Marbury-Penny trade allowed the Suns to sign Nash.

For Houston, the benefit would be they’re getting two pretty solid shooting guards in place of a decent rookie and a guy who isn’t even playing. The Rockets may well have better options in exchange for T-Mac’s deal, but getting two guys the caliber of J-Rich and LB would certainly upgrade Houston.

    Why this won’t happen

    Money, money, money.

Every deal the Suns make is dictated by money; we’ve known that for years. Such a trade would require the Suns to take back $3.6 million in season salary commitments, which would be doubled when factoring in the luxury tax and likely at least a $5 mil overall charge (it’s not plain doubled because half their salaries have already been paid).

Regardless of what this would do for long-term flexibility and the ability to make the Suns a contender down the road, I bet you that very fact makes this scenario a moot point, especially since the Suns don’t have any other salaries they could legitimately just dump without losing anything on the basketball end of things.

There were discussions of a T-Mac for J-Rich and LB deal over the summer, but I’m sure this is one of the biggest reasons it ended up fizzling.

The Suns would also be taking a major risk both short term and long term. If McGrady’s knees don’t hold up or he’s a shell of his former self, the Suns just flushed another one of Nash’s late prime years down the toilet. If they subsequently come up empty during the Summer of 2010, that’s another gamble they will have lost.

There also would be a question as to how well McGrady would fit in next to Nash. Here’s a guy used to taking 20 shots a game who wasn’t happy being just another player in Houston. If McGrady dominates the ball, this trade would end up hurting the Suns more than it would help them in the short term.

Houston likely won’t be so willing to clog up its cap with a guy like Richardson next season, and with Ariza and Battier around it’s not like Richardson and LB are needed that badly in Houston. Plus, who knows what Dork Elvis’ stat gurus say about them.

It’s too bad I’m pretty sure this trade will never happen for money and other reasons, as great as it would be for Phoenix’s 2010 cap situation. That, and it would be nice to see a Phoenix Suns guard voted into the All-Star Game this year.

I'd rather just keep Budinger and Mac then take those two.

There is a random trade thread where you can have fun all you want and no thanks to that trade. Phoenix takes that in a hearbeat and doesn't look back.

    Anyway....

Did anybody catch last nights game? San Antonio vs. Utah, the announcers threw out that Chris Paul may be rumored to be heading to San Antone for Tony Parker. What a stupid trade that would be???

The Spurs would stay contenders for the next decade if that happened! Don't do it stupid Bowser, whatever there GMs name is, we'll hate you for life. And you'll get fired anyway.

I still like McGrady for Iggy and Dalembert. Iggy has a longer term contract but he's a soldier. The guy plays his butt off and very rarely misses a game. Dalembert I think would be a compliment to Yao.

Yesterday morning I swear I saw a post from Aussie_Fozzie (sp) putting forth the following trade.

    Houston trades: McGrady, Scola, Ariza
    Houston receives: Wallace, Chandler, Igoudala

    Charlotte trades: Wallace, Chandler
    Charlotte receives: Dalembert, Ariza

    Philadelphia trades: Igoudala, Dalembert
    Philadelphia receives: McGrady, Scola

I actually like that deal and think it is close enough for each side to accept, give a draft pick or two.

Houston does it for obvious reasons, and while Chandler is injury prone (and currently injured) I'd take a risk on him if Wallace comes with him.

Charlotte is the team that might need the draft pick, but they do get a C that actually plays (similar contracts too), and a cheaper SF who puts up similar #'s, though less efficient. Remember, Ariza won't have to think he's #1 on the court with S-Jax and Felton on the court.

If we do this deal i'm guessing were not building around yao because none of those guys shoot outside.

I could of swore I saw the same thing yesterday also.

At first I was pretty luke warm about the idea. The contracts are what get me. UGH! BUT, Morey always seems to not only get talent that can help the team immediately, but they are players that can be turned into assets for future deals. That's where i would see that trade. Iggy, Wallace and Chandler would certainly help this season, but I could see one or more of them being flipped in maybe a sign-and-trade for a guy like Bosh in the offseason.

Maybe something like (not looking at salaries at the moment)...

Iggy + Chandler + Landry for Bosh (S&T) + filler

Raptors get two nice, young talents and cap relief with (at that point) Chandler's expiring deal.

    dont build around Yao!

He is my favorite player on this team but I dont want him being main option anymore. I'd even want him playing 6th man if it lengthens his NBA lifespan.

Let him be the 6th man that competes against the other Texans 6th man (cmon now)

Also, I would do that deal with a bit of hesitation. But if we can replace Ariza with Battier, I'm 110 %.

Ariza is younger and will, I repeat will do better along side a star. Not trying to be a star. He has a good contract for what he can bring to this table. And if Wallace, AI (and Yao later) are scoring options ahead of him then I think he will blossom. Blossom fast too.

I would definitely do the AI + dalembert trade. AI is such a good fit if he can improves his 3pt closer to 40%. He's like a better, taller version of our beloved baby bear KLOW!!! He plays his heart out every game. He plays great D and he plays team ball!! We get an above average center in Dalembert who can take some minutes off Yao. Even though his contract might be a bitter pill, i would be all for it if we actually get AI along with him.

We will make our championship run for the next 2 or 3 years. Many of us here's thinking that Yao will be less effective after the serious surgery but i still think he's going to come back and dominate in like 2 to 3 months of playing time. No one is gonna block his turnaround jumpers. No one is gonna block his baby hooks and he's still going to alter a lot of shots. His game was never based on power therefore i still think he would come back being unstoppable. The one thing he needs to learn is the outlet pass after he gets the rebound.

    Yao/Dalembert/Anderson
    Scolandry/Chucky defensive specialistttttt
    Bat/Ariza/Cbud
    AI/Cbud/AB
    AB/Klow

That would be a contender team from my opinion. Our defense should be top 3 with that lineup. We will crack the playoff with 7th seed if we do get AI and dalembert straight from T-mac. Next year we will be top 3 in the western conference and have a legit shot at the championship. Out of everyone in that list, only Yao's known to be injury prone. With Dalembert taking a huge chunk off from his minutes he shouldn't be having any serious injury. GO ROXXXXX. The 2011-2012 NBA CHAMPION. THE HOUSTON ROCKETS!! Keep the back to back legion coming

Actually, there was a report that San Antonio did offer Parker for Paul and New Orleans turned it down.
