Huh, well that seems terrifying to get caught in an avalanche but kudos to standing and recording it like a champ.
Somebody sent me a text around noon about a Hoover Dam explosion and I freaked out thinking the worst, but when I looked at the video, it looked more like a localized failure (whether intentional or not). I thought somebody was trying to take out the Hoover Dam (which would be a pretty incredible feat).
Read were one person died during this. It could have been worse, only 6 people were in the pool when the sinkhole formed
The only thing I can think about is why are those ppl just sitting on the edge of that pool/sinkhole acting like that whole thing couldn't just collapse and take them in, too? Crazy. Man found dead after being swept into sinkhole that opened up in private pool
Your reminder that there are no natural disasters. The standard definition that most disaster academics (yes, there is such a thing) use is: A serious disruption of the functioning of a community or a society at any scale due to hazardous events interacting with conditions of exposure, vulnerability, and capacity. So, there are natural hazards, but a disaster is made when hazard is manifested in a human environment created by human decisions and actions. If a hurricane spins off into the North Atlantic, no disaster. If a hurricane hits Miami, disaster. If a wildfire burns 5,000 acres in the Gila Wilderness, no disaster. If a wildfire burns 5,000 acres in the Denver suburbs, disaster. Hazards don't inevitably lead to disaster. Disaster happens when humans fail to take a hazard into account when they build and create--or maybe they just flat out ignore it.
It's a random disaster for the rest of the world in Oregon as USA Track & Field got its act together and is absolutely dominating - save maybe Jamaican women sprints - like it's 1984. Sydney McLaughlin just detonated her own universal record in the women's 400 H.
Track Town showing out. And just in time, as on Monday it will be 100+ all week and we'll likely have some fires which will put smoke in the air.
