I try to avoid stores like Albertson's and Randall's if I can, with the possible exception of getting stuff from the fresh deli case. Everything else can be obtained much cheaper elsewhere. Some people like "nice" grocery stores, but those are the people for whom price is not an object. If you think HEB, Wal-Mart, etc. are crowded, just find some unusual time of day to do your shopping. In our town, we have HEB, Wal-Mart, Albertson's, and Super S. I don't know how Albertson's stays in business. I never see anyone at the Super S. HEB is by far the most popular with everyone, and has a good little restaurant thing in it; I usually go between 11 p.m. and midnight (when the store closes). Wal-Mart is OK but doesn't have some of the nice unique stuff HEB has, plus it's huge and takes longer to drive to. I go there if it's already past midnight. Houston, last I saw, didn't have that many HEBs, and the ones it has are very limited. I liked Fiesta...
Safeway is now 2-2 in running their market share of Houston right into the ground. And they will soon be 3-3 unless they change their whole marketing perspective.
Actually, when Robert Onstead and R.C. Barclay passed away, Randall Onstead took over. He immediately started buying everything in sight. They bought Tom Thumb and several AppleTree stores in Austin. He then started building like crazy. They would build a palace of a shopping center and try to lease out the space. I helped open the College Station store when I was a freshman at A&M. Bottom line...crazy overexpansion lead to heavy debt leverage and the need for somebody to bail the ship. In stepped Safeway.
I liked Randalls because it seemed the cleanest. I've gone to the HEB on Beechnut and Beltway 8 and seen some disturbing fruit that was all covered in mold or flies.
Safeway will just end up selling out the rest of their stores to Randall's employees just like they did with Appletree. I would count on it.
so by Taco Bell, right??? white building?? blue awnings?? is that right?? backed up to Westchester neighborhood?
No. Going West, it is on the right side on Memorial. It is the first apartment complex you see on the right after Dairy Ashford. The entrance is at a light.
