What if you grow up thinking something is harmless, and then, later in life, you discover it's deadly?

example: 60 years ago, people didn't know that smoking was deadly.

You are right others have it much worse but at the same time for someone like Abdullah with all of his advantages and is still willing to go through with this I think that is something work respecting and I hope he doesn't do any long term damage.

Keep in mind too that even though he is a pro-football player with great training and medicine available there is still a big risk. As noted earlier Korey Stringer died at Vikings' training camp from dehydration and heat shock even though he wasn't fasting.

I am not in a position to judge whether this is madness or not. I suspect while bravery might play a role he feels that its better for him to follow the fast now when most of the Islamic community is doing so so he participates in the communal experience.

FYI. The high temp today in MN is 90-95.

IF there are any signs and symptoms of dehydration I am sure he would break his fast, his situation would allow for it.

Don't see what the issue is, with all the medical staff members available I'm sure they can keep an extra eye on him.

ok look. if you want to understand why muslims fast than read this. they fast so they can feel how the very poor people feel. this is the reason behind fasting got it?

    (1) somehow I don't think that the pro football player is going to feel how the very poor people feel just because he's fasting

    (2) People who fast are doing so by choice. Those who are very poor aren't hungry by choice.

    (3) The very poor people are hungry before sunrise, are hungry all day, and are hungry at night. They're not just hungry from sun-up to sundown. So, no, you won't feel how the very poor people feel.

    (4) So, all you have to be is really really hungry just once, and then remember how it feels. Repeated fasting is not necessary to understand what it feels like to be hungry.

    (5) Even if creating hunger in yourself reminds you of what very poor people are feeling - what are you doing about it? When you fast, do you go donate a couple thousand dollars to homeless shelters to help the hungry? Isn't that what God wants you to do (more than just making yourself hungry)? And if so, can't you just donate without fasting? Wouldn't this be more preferable to God?
