People need to get past the whole starving thing. You're still are eating 2 to 3 meals a day and it becomes pretty easy after a couple of days. Of course, staying out of this heat is key bc the thirst is tougher to deal with imo..

What finalsbound and moes did seems a whole lot harder. They were on a water diet and didn't eat for like 10 days.

It's funny, because no one ever used to question the merits of Ramadan pre-9/11.

if the muslims weren't so hungry and grumpy, there never would have been a 9/11...obviously.

ironic. you might want to try to fully understand sarcasim. a useful clue can be found in the ridiculousness of the statement.

you might also try keeping up with the posts in your own thread. that will also help to identify when someone is being sarcastic.

First off, his comment was clearly a joke. Second, Muslims aren't a race, so racist is not the correct word here.

The health benefits of fasting far outweigh any perceived risks and are better for you than our normal gluttony.

I am not Muslim nor religious but fast for the health benefits.

There is no reason to ridicule religion and religious practice.

Casually throwing around the word gay as an insult. That's really great from the guy who was just complaining about racism.

You're absolutely right, it is not easy to do what he does. However, in Dubai you can witness construction workers working in horrendous temperatures (over 40 degrees celsius) while fasting. What they are doing is wrong - they shouldn't be asked to work and if they have no choice, then they shouldn't fast. As for Mr Abdulla, I have little sympathy frankly. He has the best trainers, the best nutritionists, and nothing else to do in his life but play that sport. I'm sure he will manage with little to no noticeable change.

It's worth noting that you shouldn't fast if it is detrimental to your health. This is a personal choice in most cases.

It's also worth noting that if it's detrimental to your health, you can't cancel your fast - you just delay it for a more appropriate time. Husain Abdulla can potentially fast only on off days until he's completed as many as he can in Ramadan, and completes the difference post-Ramadan.

I have no idea why he chooses to do it this way. Many people like to take the "brave" route while completely neglecting that a Muslim MUST fulfill his employment contract as a matter of faith, and that a person MUST protect his health as a matter of faith. I'm not bothered to speculate about why they go through this madness.

    To answer your question..

Firstly, and most importantly, if it was requested by a person or people, then there is no point. I feel that this is ultimately what we will get to so let's get that out of the way right now.

    Here are some speculative reasons:

    - Gives you a taste of routine starvation. It is important to know how this feels.
    - Gives you a taste of how it feels to not get what you want. Cigarettes, coffee, sex, food, water, cursing, fighting, etc. You seem to think that it's only food and drink that we fast from.
    - I think it's unhealthy (physically) to not eat/drink for an entire day on a consistent basis. Not being healthy is a sin in Islam. Your body belongs to God, therefore you are entirely responsible for the state of your body when you return it. Kind of like DVD rental.
    - Your working day starts at sunrise in Islam. If your day starts at 4 or 5 or 6am, it makes sense that you would start fasting from then. Although in practice, you could sleep through the day, and in practice, many people pray and then go back to sleep - it defeats the original purpose of the morning prayer. Ensuring you are up at sunrise means you are less likely to engage in night-time activities and have more energy to work, be with family ,etc.

    The non-speculative reason(s):

Ultimately, it's like that because God says it's like that. We don't need for there to be reasons, but in this case, there are tons of reasons. God, by definition, knows what we don't know and knows what's best for us. Here are the verses from the Quran if you're interested which contain reasons we are sure about:

Does God hate people with cancer? My grandpa died of cancer, did God get his body back and send him to hell because his body is broken?

    Thanks

First to answer DD, I understand how you call someone like Husain Abdullah a weak minded fool.

He is not obligated to fast, as the ruling pertaining to athletes is that they are allowed to abstain from fasting.

Some athletes such as Husain, choose to fast as he said its not something he needs to do but rather he wants to do.

So, lets not call someone like that a weak minded fool.

What if someone passes out and requires medical attention, like an IV? They would still not break the rules of fasting then, correct?

No if someone is sick, or requires medical attention then they break their fast. If someone is diabetic they don't fast, only those that are able bodied. And people misconstrue that its not fasting from food and water mainly, because you are allowed to eat after sunset till sunrise. Its more about purifying your soul.

And again athletes are allowed to not fast, however some choose to with a modified diet plan.

Things that aren't in your control are not counted. I'm pretty sure that's universal across every religion ever.

    I'm sorry about your grandpa.
