    WOO HOO!!!!

Rally to Restore Sanity counter just passed 200,000 confirmed attendees. You figure each person who confirms will probably go with someone and we’re looking at 400,000. Can we hit half a million by week’s end?

It may have already been posted, but there is an Austin spinoff. Other spinoffs popping up.

Austin Satellite Rally to Restore Sanity
By Matthew Odam | Tuesday, October 5, 2010, 11:37 AM

Those who want to calmly share their views outside of the scream-o-sphere but can’t afford the time or finances required to make the 1500 mile trip to Washington, D.C. for the Daily Show’s Rally to Restore Sanity on October 30 are in luck.

A plucky group of Austinites will be simultaneously throwing their own mild-mannered rally at the State Capitol. The idea for the rally was born out of the organizers’ frustrations with not being able to attend the rally hosted by Jon Stewart.

The event will feature a giant simulcast of the D.C. event, speakers and live music. As they said in an emailed statement, “every political, personal or professional stripe is welcome” to “listen to some Austin music, meet some candidates and generally take it down a notch.”

In less than three weeks, the Facebook event page created by the organizers has already received over 2700 RSVPs.

For more information and to RSVP for the event, visit the group’s Facebook page.

Austin Satellite Rally to Restore Sanity
    Texas State Capitol, South Steps
    Saturday, October 30
    11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

On a related note, last night on “The Daily Show,” Stewart responded to Rick Sanchez’s incendiary remarks. As a show of decency, “The Daily Show” (unfortunately) scaled back their mocking of Sanchez because he had already been fired.

Mmm... not sure, man. As much as I want this rally to be absolutely gigantic, I wonder if people are RSVP'ing honestly since, well, it is the Internet after all. Granted I'm pretty sure it will be a large event, but expecting double the number of RSVP's is a bit ambitious IMO.

Stewart and Colbert's Dueling Rallies Will Be Broadcast Live

In keeping with a commitment to return to all things reasonable, Jon Stewart has announced that on October 30th his Rally to Restore Sanity and Stephen Colbert's March to Keep Fear Alive will be broadcast live on Comedy Central and streamed live online.

If you're making the trip to D.C., Tuesday night's episode laid down some ground rules. No nudity. No throwing stuff. No fascism. All of which, Jon says, boil down to the very basic "when in doubt, don't be douchey." I guess you can't go basso :p

But if a busy Halloween weekend means you can't join the level-headed masses on the National Mall between 3rd Street and 7th Street, basic cable and the Internet have you covered.

Just saw Colbert's and Oprah's surprise appearances on The Daily Show to promote/combine the rallies and give the audience free tickets to it. Pretty cool.

Feels like I'm gonna miss an awesome party if I don't go. :)

They both appeal to you, but your funny bone belongs to Jon Stewart.

I got the same. I didn't really know how to answer several of them, though.

Rally To Restore Sanity's Roots: 'Our Show Has Changed'

For the past two weeks, we've been documenting the Roots of the Rally To Restore Sanity (and/or Fear!), in an effort to demonstrate how, over the course of many years, the Daily Show and the Colbert Report have made a sincere and sustained effort to encourage a more sane and reasonable discourse. Readers have sent in suggestions, and they were magnificent. Your human flesh search engine act found key moments from past segments and forgotten interviews that gave birth to the sanity concept. At times, you all found the origins of the language Jon Stewart used to introduce the rally itself. From me to all of you, I'm very grateful for your long memories and the eloquent cases you made.

We close out this examination with the most cited moment from readers, and it's perhaps the most seminal moment in the history of the Daily Show. It was the opening segment of the September 20, 2001 edition of the Daily Show, their first show back from the attacks of September 11th. Jon Stewart took to the stage, and made his best effort at elucidating the great grief that the country was feeling, unsure of when or how he'd be able to be funny again. It was a weird time for the show. "Irony" has been declared to be dead. There was little to joke about, and few in the mood. But that's what comedians do, they take risks and make leaps and hope that they've got wit and soul enough in them to expose some truths and settle some nerves and unite an audience in common mirth.

This is the segment where Stewart talks about the privilege of getting to do the Daily Show, to be allowed to chuck "spitballs" from the "back of the country" at the news of the day. A lot of the people who believe that it's not Stewart's role to attempt anything resembling seriousness cite that "spitballs" line as the moment that Stewart permanently defined himself. They forget what he says next: "Our show has changed. I don't doubt that. What it's become, I don't know."

The rest of the clip speaks for itself, so I guess I should get out of the way of the pictures! I'll only add that when I watched this again, after so many years, I couldn't help but think that maybe someone has recently stolen this segment, stripped it of its sincerity, and turned it into self-serving schtick. Maybe someone should go and steal it back.

    See you tomorrow!

I doubt this last minute rally will make any kind of an impact in preventing an all-out rout of the Democrats on Tuesday.
