What's hypocritical about Stewart's comedy skit?

Really? I have to explain this to you?

Why didn't he invite someone on stage who had called for Obama to be killed?

Huh? I fail to see the connection.

You are working really hard in your own mind to discredit the Peace Train/Crazy Train/Love Train skit. It's point is that "love" is something we can all agree with.

Some don't agree with the Peace Train. Some don't agree with Crazy Train.
But who doesn't like the Love Train?

If you are offended by that sentiment, the "Take it down a notch" seems to be hitting a little too close to home to you, huh?

Because it was too expensive to bus in that many tea-party members :p

Did you just become a member of clutchfans this month so you could fling poo in this forum before the elections? Did Dick Armey put you up to this?

Yeah, you caught me. Can't put anything past you.

Actually, I think the Tea Partiers are a bit naive. I just don't think they are especially prone to violence.

You can't take it down a notch by inviting a guy who called for the killing of Salman Rushdie.

10 YEARS ago he took it down a notch himself by retracting that statement.

I'm failing to see your concern.

Yes you can if you let the man explain himself:

    Rolling Stones Interview in 2000:

"I'm very sad that this seems to be the No. 1 question people want to discuss. I had nothing to do with the issue other than what the media created. I was innocently drawn into the whole controversy. So, after many years, I'm glad at least now that I have been given the opportunity to explain to the public and fans my side of the story in my own words. At a lecture, back in 1989, I was asked a question about blasphemy according to Islamic Law, I simply repeated the legal view according to my limited knowledge of the Scriptural texts, based directly on historical commentaries of the Qur'an. The next day the newspaper headlines read, "Cat Says, Kill Rushdie." I was abhorred [appalled?], but what could I do? I was a new Muslim. If you ask a Bible student to quote the legal punishment of a person who commits blasphemy in the Bible, he would be dishonest if he didn't mention Leviticus 24:16."

    Personal website:

"I never called for the death of Salman Rushdie; nor backed the Fatwa issued by the Ayatollah Khomeini--and still don’t. The book itself destroyed the harmony between peoples and created an unnecessary international crisis.

When asked about my opinion regarding blasphemy, I could not tell a lie and confirmed that--like both the Torah and the Gospel--the Qur’an considers it, without repentance, as a capital offense. The Bible is full of similar harsh laws if you’re looking for them. However, the application of such Biblical and Qur’anic injunctions is not to be outside of due process of law, in a place or land where such law is accepted and applied by the society as a whole... This requires reading.

However, if he sticks to his guns and continues to argue his point without regard for reality, he could end up being right! ... Right?

    I read this:

"He must be killed. The Qur'an makes it clear - if someone defames the prophet, then he must die."

I'm pretty sure he's to the right of being right. To his credit, he does have the determination of a kamikaze pilot.

A good article, but I worry that the author is too skewed and somewhat missed the point (despite stating it at the beginning). Does this dude think the insanity only comes from one side of the aisle? He must, because only the extreme right is what he's stated as examples, not the extreme left.

I think showing examples of both extremes would've helped his argument and been more of the essence of the Rally itself. The Rally had plenty of examples of both extremes in their videos, fortunately.

    And nothing else.

It's cool though, not everyone chooses to be well informed. It's not an uncommon position.

...so he was baited into a hypothetical question and the media twisted his comments to make a sensational headline.

Not only is Yusef's case not hypocritical ...but instead it is CASE IN POINT of "take it down a notch".

Thanks da Whopper for pointing this out to me. It's an interesting wrinkle to the rally I hadn't previously considered. ;)

Once again - imagine Stewart inviting someone who once said that Obama should be killed. There is no difference between that and the situation with Stevens.

Can you read his entire statement or do you insist on taking the words out of context and ignoring his later statements on the subject?
