I was just wondering why commentators keep questioning whether Rajon Rondo can man the point in the NBA Finals and help the Celtics win a championship. The guy is playing very well, and takes care of the ball. What's your take on this? Playerfile: http://tinyurl.com/343tk2 Assist/Turnover ranking: http://tinyurl.com/2nmosq
I think rajon is perfectly fine for a championship level team because the Celtics don't need that much out of him in terms of scoring, and he does everything else above average to excellent. His hands are a double edged sword, they are the reason he has superior ball handling but they hinder his ability to shoot.
He's done well so far this year. As someone said in another thread, with Ray Allen and PP on the same team, the need for a great PG on the Celtics is decreased. But Rondo is fast, athletic, has good handles, can finish and dish, plays decent defense and (so far) has been hitting mid-range jumpshots. That's all the Celtics need from him. Kendrick Perkins is their big question mark. I smell a trade for another big man. Kurt Thomas or P.J. Brown would be perfect.
As a Celtics fan who has watched a lot of their games this season, I can say that Rondo has done everything that everyone has expected of him, and more. In the offseason Rondo practiced his mid-range jumper like crazy, knowing that with PP, Garnett, and Allen, if he could hit those shots the offense wouldn't stagnate. He also wanted to be the type point guard that facilitates the play of the stars on the team. IMO, he's done both of those things perfectly, and on top of it he hasn't been a liability on defense at all.
That's the best part of his game and the most under rated. He has huge hands long arms and can move fast defensively. I think the question was could he take the pressure of the situation (which he has done) and if he could improve his jump shot enough to make other teams continue to guard him defensively. I don't know what commentators you are talking about, but most people who have seen him play this year feel like he has answered the question of his ability to handle the point for this team. I think Perkins does fine especially since I doubt you can get a better player to fit in that system. But I agree if they are looking to upgrade a starter he would be the only one that came to mind at this point.
Except for 3 point shooting, basically Rondo IS what we want Rafer to be. The difference in his jumpshot from last season is incredible and shows he is truly dedicated to basketball. I jumped on the Celtcs bandwagon when KG signed on. It seems like they have played together for years.
IMO, the only reason you can say Perkins does fine is because they are 27-3 in spite of him. He fits because he can't do anything on offense (which isn't needed) while KG and their team scheme cover up his dumbness on defense. He's terrible.
Chauncey Billups. Tony Parker. Media are very skeptical that he can even stay on the floor against those guys, who are really the only two PG's the Celtics will have to worry about. Personally, I think Rondo will be able to hold up well because he is a great role player.
Just kidding you, HayesFan. I do, however, think that Rondo is a scrub hiding behind three all-stars.
Agreed, has anyone ever gone from not being able to hit anything outside the paint to becoming one of the best midrange shooters in the game in a single season. I love the fact how he never takes a 3 pt shot
roflmao... didn't date and dump me, but I did hear that he stole Patrick Sparks woman can't do anything at UK without the rumors. He may be "hiding" behind the big three, but then who wouldn't be??? You'd have to put a Chris Paul or a Jason Kidd with them for the PG not to be just a role player. Same with the center position, Kendrick may not be all that, but at least he isn't hurting the team. With three all stars as your focus isn't that the only thing you want your role players to be a support that won't pull down the group? I still say Rondo's defense is underrated as far as point guards go. I wanted to see more of Rondo vs Brooks last night to see who was faster
Rajon is probably the worse PG starter in the NBA but who cares, Celtics really need that not someone who will take shots that are not necessery.
Rondo was the reason the Rockets were even in the game. His defense on the pick and roll was absolutely terrible. Rafer got to the lane at ease. Luckily, that team really doesn't need him.
Anyone see the Boston vs Utah game last week? Rondo got manhandled by Deron Williams. Stronger point guards can just penetrate.. that and his 3 point shooting are his flaws..thats about it. He makes a good backup, but i still think Boston can improve at the PG position
We're probably on the same page. I think the Celtics are just fine with Rondo manning the PG position. I only mean to point out that Rondo isn't a great player performing below his ability to accommodate three other stars, and, rather, that he is the type of PG that would be thoroughly exposed if he didn't have so much talent around him.
