It's actually pretty easy to like RATM and not give two shiits about their political views. Ask any white dude in their 40's. We were kinda jazzed when Audioslave came out until they repeated their first album 2 more times.

ramones suck and tons of those bands I've never even heard of. You have to factor in commercial success at some point. You didn't even mention Van Halen or many commercially successful bands at all.

    Woah ... seriously?

P.S. Johnny was known within the punk rock community as one of its few conservatives, and was a staunch supporter of the Republican Party. Johnny made his political affiliation known to the world in 2002, when the Ramones were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. After thanking all who made the honor possible—clad in his trademark T-shirt, ripped blue jeans and leather jacket—he said "God bless President Bush, and God bless America."

Yeah I'm not a fan of the ramones at all. KISS either.

I just think in the discussion of the best american band you can't just say Audioslave and then not take into account commercial success, otherwise it is just your list of favorite bands lol.

Also Morello is hugely over rated, taking the cord out of a guitar and rubbing it on a string doesn't make him a virtuoso

In addition to thegary's list, if you're looking for more popular fare...

Beach Boys, The Grateful Dead, The Talking Heads, Violent Femmes, Nirvana -- just off the top of my head -- are way better than Aerosmith. Shart, man, even The Eagles are better than Aerosmith.

And I seriously did not know there was a single person in the world that could ever think The Ramones suck. They are the epitome of rock and roll.

No accounting for taste as they say.

Meh, your list is way better than his. Beach boys, Nirvana, Eagles (kinda countryish though) should be higher. I guess it has to be something more than "my favorite bands"
I thought they were punk rock? Whatever they suck, and blow. They remind me of the 80's hair band, like a earlier version or different version of twisted sister.

I know this is more rhetoric than anything else but it stinks of socialism: quieting all voices but your's and your group. Do you not see this?

Yes! These bands are all far and away better, more creative, and more important than Aerosmith.

KISS and the Beachboys are also better. REM, The Heartbreaksers (Johnny Thunders band) Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (not Johnny Thunders band), Pere Ubu, The Cars, Wilco, The Pixies are all so much better than Aerosmith.

Good for you for showing other bands that don't lean to the left.

My point was that Aerosmith has been a popular band for 40 years. No other group has been that popular that long.

Exactly. What's the point of coming to something called debate and discussion if you only want to hear like-minded opinions???

    Lil' dude needs a hug.

The Grateful Dead, among others, think you're wrong. I guess it depends on your criteria.

Hold on here. I'm not prepared to say Aerosmith is the greatest American band (though they have the most gold and platinum albums of any American band), but the dissing is out of hand. Their first four albums were great. I'm not wild about their later stuff, but I don't get the overall hate. As for their politics, what have they done to suggest they are a "Conservative" besides taking Wal-Mart money and Tyler appearing on a Fox show?

Aerosmith was definitely awesome. I don't get the hate either. Not necessarily the best, but are still amongst the all-time greats.

Red Hot Chili Peppers > Aerosmith

RHCP have to be in the running for sure.
