The problem with Rafer as a backup PG is that usually you also have less scoring potential because the backup doesn't play as many minutes with the starters. Hopefully, when the backup PG comes in, you're either close or have a lead. The backup's main goal then is to not get the team in a deep hole or lose that lead. Depending on whose on the floor with him as a backup you might see more shots (aka bad shots) from him. What is very frustrating to watch is when the starters put a lot of energy into getting a lead, go to the bench for a rest, and then have the bench come in and squander it. The backup PG position needs to be solid -- not great -- but solid. I don't know if Rafer fits that description.

You're absolutely right. Rafer shouldn't be our backup point guard. He should be ANOTHER TEAM'S backup point guard. Preferably Atlanta's or Boston's.

Sorry to those who were responding directly to items in my original post, but I've been working all day and just now got back to the Board.

I'm grateful that a majority agree with my basic premise of Rafer being soft and with most of my thoughts. This is by far the best collective response I've ever elicited from a combination of CC.Net pros like of Clutch, Deckard, DD, RoxTxia, Solid, Smoothie, etc.

(Oh, and for thanks to TTRocket for the props as well). ;)

For those taking issue with various aspects of my post:

    For SHAKEYOHIPSYAO -

Regarding my 3pt and/or passing ability; Ever heard of hyperbole? Please can it with the "Stop the lies" crapola.

    For BeJesus -

I never thought of Rafer as being the Everett of the ROX, but now that you mention it, it's somewhat of an apt analogy...

However, unlike Rafer, Everett was brought to Houston specifically for his DEFENSE!!! And, despite that fact, as a Major League, (or NBA Level) Pro, YOU'VE GOT TO STEP UP IN THE CLUTCH, and if you can't then you're a glorified bench player!! :p

    And for DonkeyMagic -

I don't know if you've played Organized Basketball, but I have. I played in High School, and had I gone to College right out of H.S. I believe I could have at least made a Div II team if not as a backup on Div I.

I KNOW what it means to be soft and anyone whose played a full court game, 5 on 5 knows the difference between someone who is soft and someone who is not. Rafer plays SOFT!!! :(

    And finally....

For those older Rockets fans, we once had a backup PG named Scotty Brooks :D (who I think is an Assistant somewhere in the league...), and he's always the player I compared myself to in terms of style.

I'm barely 6ft tall, but I played defense like a man possessed (aka Scotty) and I could hold my own in terms of knocking down open shots (Scotty had a damn good 3pt set shot). Like Rafer I struggled with finishing in a crowd near the rim, but unlike Rafer I was NOT afraid of contact. If we had Scotty now as he was then, he would easily be the starting PG on this team. :p

Can anyone imagine how we might do IF a miracle happened and we actually got Bob Sura back for a playoff run...!!! Then we could go make it to the WCF!!! :D
