whoever moderates this forum ought to move this thread to another section of the forum. this has nothing to do with game action or roster moves.

If you look at the thread topics around here, most of them aren't.

no need for a literal interpretation.

    Rockets talk is Rockets talk.

    Dear Rick Chan,

You truly ARE THE DAILY IGNORANT.

With your 12/9 article entitled “Ming has run completely afoul,” you succeed in not only highlighting your own biases but also your ignorance of sports as well. To even IMPLY that Yao Ming is not what you want in an Asian role model is to discredit Yao, his family, and Team Yao (his marketing machine) for all their achievements to date.

Yao Ming is and will continue to be a WONDERFUL role model for ALL races.

He represents family, humility, honor, and hard work. While Yao himself is not an American citizen, the Yao story is the classic tail of the AMERICAN IMMIGRANT, for all its hopes, hardships, and glory. If you truly followed the Yao story, you would realize that he is the exact ANTITHESIS of everything you find wrong in the NBA. Unfortunately, as evidenced in your writing, you still seem mired in separatist ways.

Your impression of the NBA is just that – an impression. To think that the NBA depicts a stage for the “streetball-court from the ghettos” is as glaring a misperception as your idea that “underprivileged black boys feel cold toward more-intellectual aspirations.” Do you know how many streetball players ever make it into the NBA? They are in the minority’s minority. Yet being a responsible columnist, I’m sure you have all the statistics in front of you before you wrote this intellectual piece.

And to say that “Sport, especially basketball but except baseball, is probably the least erudite of all human activities” tells me that you really don’t know a damn about basketball, or any sport for that matter. Given how many people enjoy a whole gamut of sports, we should probably defer to your suggestions as to “acceptable venues of recreation.” Here again, I am appalled by your arrogance and note that it’s easier to discredit and criticize (or seeing as you like the word better, intellectualize) than it is to create and build something good. Yao is more than a talented athlete; he will do more in his lifetime to improve Asian standing in the Western world than you can ever do with mere cynicism.

But hey, lots not forget some social commentary on the African-Americans too! You write that, “<African-Americans> do not see themselves as professors, doctors, politicians, literary authors or even prime ministers. Because, they can only dream of Madison Square Garden as their holy land.” I dare you to raise this before any African-American group. Unfortunately, I don’t think you can ever comprehend that MANY very unfortunate and nderprivileged people simply can’t even ENTERTAIN such cozy futures?

Well, here’s my spin, Mr. Chan.

Perhaps it’s the “overprivileged Asian boy who feels cold toward his ‘successful’ brethren, of ANY RACE, who works twice as hard as he does and succeeds in fields ‘outside of an office’.” And perhaps it’s the “luxury of life bequeathed to that Asian boy who never had to worry about food or shelter and who’s only dream is to secure his own comfortable existence.” You can intellectualize and write all you want about what sad state of affairs the NBA is. But I tell you, as the cliche goes, "talk is cheap."

Ghetto or not, kids aren’t born wanting to get into the NBA.

Teamwork, family, and a chance to come out a winner by one’s own efforts -- these are but a few of the things that attract people to sports. And this isn’t just about being American or participating in American sports. This is about embracing LIFE as opposed to the cynical views that people like you endorse. The NBA isn’t nearly as “black” as you think. Anyone watching basketball this past DECADE knows how international it’s growing.

Lastly, the greatest irony with this article is how you presume to be such an intellectual authority on sports and what Asians need as role models. Yet everything you convey is anything BUT intellectual. Perhaps you ought to take a cue from Yao and learn a lesson or two in humility.

    And FYI, I am Asian.

    Yours,

    D. K. Leo

Stupid idiotic remarks... If you knew better, you'd know that when it comes to votes, the Taiwanese are equally divided about the issue of reunification.

Do you hear a lot of propaganda or something? Just because some old ass people raised during the occupation era admire the Japanese culture doesn't hide the majority that remember when Japan raped and enslaved the island. You're taking one segment of the population and blowing it up as the whole.

Get your head out of your ass over these boneheaded stereotypes. You're no better than the Daily Ignorant.

Response to Rick Chan's Daily article

Here was my response to my school's (University of Washington)newspaper about Rick Chan's article. Im not sure if they printed it, but I wouldnt be suprised if they didnt because they have a knack for printing garbage and ignoring people actually tyring to make a point.

    Dear Rick,

Although I attend the UW, I am originally from Houston where Yao Ming has joined the ranks of “filthy rich ghetto lowlifes.” While your article was… slightly inflammatory towards the black community, I want to address it for a different reason because I’m sure that you will receive plenty of friendly letters from your peers regarding some of your remarks. Houston, Rick, is a very large and diverse city. My High School’s (Lamar High School) demographic breakdown was about 33% White, 33% Black, and 33% Hispanic. While this ratio is already a wonderful show of diversity, there is one thing you might notice (especially if you are familiar with the Seattle breakdown). Where are the Asians? The Asian community is no doubt present in Houston, however Asian culture does not have as much influence as White, Black, or Hispanic culture. What Yao Ming has done is instill a sense and presence of Asian culture that Houston has never seen. The token car dealership billboards off the freeway now stand side by side with huge, 30-foot billboards in Mandarin. Chinese culture has been stressed to everyone affiliated with the Rocket’s organization and a lot of fans have made efforts to learn about Yao’s roots as well. How can this cultural exchange that Yao has spurred be considered a negative? The formerly understated Asian community in Houston now has a new face and in my opinion a very, very good one. Have you ever actually bothered to read a Yao Ming interview? Not only is he very personable and polite, but also extremely intelligent, witty, and overwhelmingly modest. Modesty is something the NBA admittedly lacks these days. If Yao Ming is setting any kind of example, it is most definitely a positive one. He is following the example of former Rocket center Hakeem Olajuwon, who was probably the most humble superstar the NBA has ever known. As for Yao being influenced by his “ghetto lowlife” teammates, I don’t think you have much to worry about, unless you’d like to write your next article targeting Steve Francis. If you don’t know who he is, he’s the despicable, young, mature leader of the Rockets who spends a good deal of his free time reading to children at schools (what a monster, eh?). That is, when he’s not too busy shooting people, coppin’ the new Benz, or rollin’ on dubs…

    Regards,
Dan Kamas, Houstonian and UW Senior

Stirring up controversy for the sake of controversy is the about as low as journalism can go.

This dude reminds me of another character from, of all places, Harvard.

    http://www.asianweek.com/2001_04_06/news1_harvard_essay.html

Articles like Rick Chan's is pure Crap, IMO. Why? b/c it's not SIMPLY ABOUT stirring intellectual conversation. These remarks and quite inflammatory and the "LAST VOICE" you want to be typified as the "Asian American" voice. How his editor EVER let him get away with such garbage is simple amazing.

    Think about it.

He wouldn't be writing this kind of stuff if he didn't share some of these views. Else, how could you have the conscience to express these opinions. And even if he knows what he's doing, doesn't that make his actions all the more egregious?

Truth is, people like Rick need to get a clue.

If you want controversy, Rick, write for the Enquirer and leave the sports for the real journalists out there.

    Hear, Hear InvisibleFan!!

NetsFan2002, if you read the article, the idiot author is obviously Asian-American ("The signs are not good at all when Yao Ming, the 7-foot-5 basketball rookie for the Houston Rockets, becomes a positive spokesman for Asian-American males") and, speaking as an Asian-American male myself, he could care less if Yao was Chinese, Taiwanese, Hong Kong-ese, or I'm gonna bring you to your knees (i'm pissed...sorry). You labeling him something that you obviously have little regard for shows your own ignorance.

This guy is a pompous prick who'd rather see Cricket and Badminton replace Football and Basketball. Yo Ricky...a lot of Asian Americans are already mad that we're thought of as engineers and violinists. Yao, Ichiro, Dat are guys who transcends the non-athletic male Asian stereotypes. I agree, kids shouldn't grow up wanting to only be ball players. But they should look at these guys and know that it is possible. Even more important, cheering for these guys is like cheering for your country...it makes you feel proud when they do well. IMO, what they're doing gives all Asians a sense of empowerment. Shoot...I could talk forever. Just can't stand fools who think holding people back in a culture is for the best. Let Yao make his living, let us enjoy it.

    Wonderful response.

That said, I'd save my effort trying to reason with a madcow if I were you.

Guess what? He might not be that stupid after all. That's just some people's shortcut strategy to fame. Many people live off of stuff like that.

I won't give it a damn to scrubs like this guy. BTW, what's his name again?

Well, I said because his attitude towards japan, I blieved he is taiwanese. I am not saying because he is taiwanese, he has that attitude.
One is sufficient condition, the other is essential condition.
Also, I have apologized for my imprudence. Please forgive a man who was just irritated by some ignorant and became a similar ignorant.
