That, and it's a continuation of another commerical where they go with some foreign dude jetsetting across the world.
Umm... How about 4 white guys sitting in a country club and when 2 black men try to walk in they are turned away. Thayt wouldn't be so funny. But it applies because of the steroetype of alot of clubs of a WASP place to be.
It would be funny if they were out there causing a ruckus. Sort of like in that movie Happy Gilmore. No he isn't black, but he's a middle class guy from Boston. Similar idea. I think there are jokes regarding black culture. Have you seen the Fresh Prince of Bel Air? With Robert Horry, I mean Will smith?
Post of the week. At least. Equating the alleged discrimination of whites by rappers with the discrimination of minorities by golf/country clubs is a perfect example of the gross, whiny, poor little rich white kid racism double standard threads that appear here from time to time. Yeah, those big, bad rappers are really oppressing the white man. Or maybe... the idea that rappers, who rise or fall at the pleasure of a music industry which is still largely owned and operated by wealthy white men, are even capable of excercising any meaningful form of discrimination is as stupid as it is bratty. Decent white rappers do fine and good white rappers do great, as it is with decent/good/great white basketball players. Isn't that the kind of ‘merit based’ system the wannabe-oppressed priveleged class has its president whining to the Supreme Court for right now? Power can only be excercised by the powerful, and discrimination can only be meaningfully excercised by those in a position to inflict meaningful damage through discrimination. And I’m not talking about hurt feelings here. I’m talking about meaningful harm: lost jobs, education, opportunity, physical freedom, and even lives, due to the color of one’s skin – harm made worse by systematic perpetration over time and a government which has historically indulged in discriminatory practices or, at best, allowed them to go unchecked for far too long a time. Always by white people, never by black people. Whether there should be or not (and when the world we’re shooting for arrives, there shouldn’t be), there absolutely is a difference between the races and their relative power to cause harm through racist acts. White people continue to enjoy power way out of proportion with their numbers and they continue to enjoy immunity to all but the slightest damage from racist acts. Even in the case of affirmative action, a program which should end the minute racial discrimination does and not a minute sooner, the power remains in the hands of white politicians, white schools and white judges. If you disagree with affirmative action, your beef should be with the people in power rather than the people the program seeks to benefit. Because here is the whole deal: The people the program (and virtually all other civil rights and anti-discriminatory programs) seeks to benefit remain powerless to inflict meaningful damage, because they continue to lack power. That’s why the program exists and that’s why there continues to exist a meaningfully different standard in considering issues of race and racism in this country.
Nope just the first 3-4 posts, then it turned in to blah, blah, blah so I just answered the question that was asked
I am really surprised at the many responses to this thread. The bottom line is everything needs to be taken within context. Citing the Smirnoff Ice commercial as a double standard was simpily a bad choice. Historically, blacks had been excluded from many places, such as schools, works, restaurants, country clubs etc. Whites didnt have that problem. So if one reverses the roles in a commercial similar to the Smirnoff Ice, more people, especially blacks might find it offensive. There are certain things "racially enlightened" people simpily dont do. Stereotypic comments, such as associating fried chickens and watermelons with blacks are insulting, so is a white dude putting on a black face. I wonder how many white people will be offended if a black comedian put on a white face. Hmmmm.
That is so stupid. Murder and racism are totally different. Your stupidity shows exactly why O.J. got off. If the prosecution would have stayed focused on domestic violence instead of race maybe there would have been a different conclusion. And furthermore, if you are one of these people who thinks O.J. getting off makes up for the years of discrimination to blacks, then you are even more of an idiot.
It's good to have another ally. Whites have invested much more energy in the whole "we can't dance" thing. I think it is old and tired. I will guarantee if an african american have produced that commercial, he/she wouldn't have wasted money on such an antiquated concept.
