Not much experience with housekeeping staff? The way it works is the HK manager speaks english. The front desk people deal with that person. Any requests for HK are supposed to go through the front desk.
I understood it was a joke, but I thought he was trying to use the joke to make a point. It failed. yes it is kind of funny to use Spanish names in class, and you are right that I doubt he was threatened with expulsion should he not adopt a Spanish name. It's just another reason why the joke wasn't really related to the situation in the article. RThe claim that it wasn't an elective is also funny. Clearly it was. He could have taken French. Or he could have taken neither and done it in college.
or French. You didn't have to take Spanish. You also could have not done the name part and not been expelled. You can try and salvage the joke, but it won't help it be applicable in this situation.
You have to do the name thing. If you don't you fail. You can try and salvage your inability to actually read and comprehend posts, but what is the point?
I am not really worried about it. I just prefer it to dealing with front desk. Like i said before, it is better to tell someone right there you need some more towels and you will be needed them everyday (along with a tip) or any special instructions than the front desk. Hotel is a hardcore service industry. I can see where it could be an issue. This is a business where people complain that they had only 1 popcorn in their rooms instead of 2. Or they were not offered their cookies when they checked in because they are Diamond Hilton members or something.
Also I think what this guy did is pathetic. Don't understand how a name change will in any way make his customers happy.
Wait - what exactly is the risk here? If you speak to them in English, and they don't understand, what's the big deal? But besides that, you say you're bilingual and took Spanish in high school. Why do you go to the front desk instead of just speaking to them in Spanish? It can be broken Spanish - they'll figure out you need more towels.
The risk is they pretend to understand or we both have to do the walk of shame after it becomes clear it is not happening. I took spanish in high school and would never think about trying to speak it in real time. I would rather take my chances with the front desk.
