So, you don't see a problem with this (not sure if Sociologist is a profession of respect that doesn't allow disagreement, please let me know)?

Like Jeff said, if you're not comfortable saying it around the people you're mocking, you probably shouldn't say it at all. The fact these they don't talk that way around black people, but would around white people speaks volumes.

Go back to those pictures and count the number of black people you see in them.

    I agree

    The people defending it
are the same people that would think it was offensive
for me to say . . i think all white people are racist
because all the klansmen, racist parties etc
then state. . . my racism is not to be blamed on me. . but on the white people
throwing these parties. .the Klansmen where I grew up . . the white guy
    that stole my parking space

If you are racist. . if you are over 18
you need to own it. either Change it or Accept it.

    BTW
Ms Berry's statement seems to point to the glorification of the 'style' by the media. She is a journalist and he feild of expertise is the media.

At the extreme one could surmise that she is saying that the Media is reenforcing racial stereotypes.

After 400 years of being made fun of I think white people have played it out already.

That sounds like a problem between you and Chris Rock. Why do people always bring this up everytime? Like Chris Rock is the judge on whether black people are allowed to do something or that Chris Rock represents all black peoples views.

People are still telling us to lighten up about the Michael Richards thing, people are still telling us to lighten up about slavery. Does "lighten up" mean forget ____ ever happened? Not going to be that easy! Life's too short period, I'd rather spend my life fighting for equality than to always be seen as someone "to make fun of" because of my race or someone that "knows how to dance" and "hoop" to entertain. My ancestors fought for civil rights and won it's now our job to fight for civil equality, which is still ongoing. By the looks of it we still have a long way to go.

i'm gonna throw a stereotype-themed party and have my guests dress in outfits that make fun of their own culture/race. i wonder what kind of reactions that would get.

I'm guessing absolutely none since there probably wouldn't be malicious intent behind the stereotypes.

Still, no one's answered my question. Why would you want to offend someone?

Hopefully it would bring the same reaction but from people who hold their own race to higher standards, but that won't make the news.

Apparently as long as nobody at your party is black........no reaction I would guess.

On the comedy topic...few things are more irritating than a comic whose whole routine is: "white people be like........then Black people be like..................., oh and then white people be like.................then Black people be like.............."

So tired, not original at all, and just plain isn't funny IMHO no matter what the race of the comedian.

doesn't everything that involves "race" offend someone somehow, no matter the intent?

i don't see the big deal about the parties but i understand why some folks would get upset. but, comedians make racial jokes all the time (about their own race and others) and it's hard to believe that those offended by these parties don't laugh at those jokes themselves. to me, that's hypocritical.

No matter what happens, someone, somehow, someway is going to be offended about something. The whole political correctness ideology that has run rampant in our society is just absolutely ridiculous. If someone has the intent to offend and be malicious, reacting like it offends you is exactly what the person wants. Jesus said turn the other cheek.

If we're supposed to turn the other cheek, why are you so upset about political correctness running rampant in our society? In fact, why would you b**** about anything at all if we're just supposed to turn the other cheek?

Yeah, let's just let ignorance continue instead of trying to educate some people.

I'm not offended and you could pretty much talk as much **** about whatever topic you wanted and I'd be like, sure, whatever.

Once again, it's the intent. Of course people laugh at comedians making jokes about race because, unless they're Michael Richards, they know it's light-hearted.

How do you know what was the intent of the people at the parties?

I don't know for sure, but the lack of black people in any of the pictures, not to mention the guy who painted his entire body black (who doesn't know that's considered offensive) gives me a good idea. But you're right, they're probably all PC raging liberals.

BTW, I should never expect you to b**** about anything ever again on here. You should be Christ-like and turn the other cheek if anything at all bothers you, including your annoyance at PC run amok.

Plagiarizing myself from the Clemson thread (credit to Basso for the inspiration)-

All of the people defending these r****ded theme parties want to pretend this stuff happens in a vacuum. It doesn't. The history of slavery, segregation, and virulent racism against blacks is the context in which these parties take place and makes them especially despicable.

I'll break out the Nazi analogy to try and explain this point.

In the '30s and '40s Germans making fun of Jews because they had big noses, were money grubbers, and bred like vermin is not the same as Jews making fun of Nazis by mocking the Heil Hitler salute or painting on a Hitler mustache.

The history of discrimination against the Jews in Germany and the power differential between the two groups makes all the difference in the world when judging the two similar actions.

i thought their intent was to have a light-hearted themed-party about hip hop culture. i mean, there are white people who dress like that too, no? :)

I think his point is that the kids at the party are ignorant. Why are a bunch of ignorant kids throwing a private party so offensive? This wasn't a school-sponsored party, it was just a bunch of dumb college kids being ignorant in the privacy of their own trailer park.

I'm sure there are plenty more like them. So what is the solution? Should we round 'em all up and 're-educate' them? Like they did in the movie Red Dawn at the drive-in? "Avenge me!!!!!"

Why on earth should we get to that point?

This thread illustrates once again that white people are stupid. Stupid stupid stupid.
