Again the US foreign aid budget is less than 1% total budget so it's not like we are sacrificing US domestic interests for other countries. In terms of profits helping develop infrastructure in another country potentially can generate profits and profits for US businesses. US domestic consumption is obviously very important but alone isn't enough to sustain continued economic development. As the trade war showed loss of foreign purchases of things like agricultural products can be very bad for several sectors of our economy. Helping another country improve means they will be in a better position to purchase US products and hire US experts. Note the PRC Belt and Road initiative isn't about Chinese altruism. It is about building up the PRC's geopolitical influence and about developing new markets for Chinese products and services.
