I'm not defending giving preferential treatment to a certain race. I am sympathizing with waiters who give preferential treatment to groups of people that have a greater probability of leaving money.
So you are sympathizing with racial profiling. I'm not trying to fight you. I understand it. I understand why any racial profiling happens -- by and large, the stereotypes that lead to it are based in some factual thing. I just happen to think it's wrong to ever visit the sins of a race, no matter how large or small, on an individual member of that race. For the record, I was a waiter in New York for more than three years. And I don't disagree with the stereotype. More often than not, my black customers were lousy tippers. And if I'd waited on someone before (black or not) that had tipped me poorly they got less than my best the next time around. But I never would have extended that to a new customer just because he shared a skin color with the old one. We just disagree about that I guess.
Speaking of Bologna -- Bologna Sandwiches at the Waldorf-Astoria By Kate Krader, Senior Features Editor Related Categories: News If there’s one New York City hotel that’s ubiquitous these days, at least for me, it’s the venerable Waldorf-Astoria. At the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen last weekend, chef John Doherty, who co-wrote last year’s Waldorf-Astoria Cookbook, served something at the tasting tent that must have been delicious because there was always a huge mob around him. Back in NYC, readers of the New York Post's Page 6 and every celebrity blog will know that Angelina Jolie recently set up camp there for the premiere of her new movie, A Mighty Heart, while Brad Pitt partied in the hotel’s Sir Harry’s bar. Celebrity watchers will also have recently been reminded that Paris Hilton spent part of her childhood in a suite at the Waldorf. I’m not sure what those famous guests eat/ate when they stay there, but I do know that when President George Bush stays at the hotel, he likes to order bologna sandwiches on white bread with mayonnaise, with Doritos on the side. Apparently that counts as a special order since the hotel doesn’t stock Wonder Bread, the President’s favorite. http://www.foodandwine.com/blogs/mouthing-off/2007/6/22/Bologna-Sandwiches-at-the-WaldorfAstoria sorry, couldn't help myself. carry on...
heh I prefer my Ritz crackers with btw.....is it stereotyping to think that all whiteys are racist? just curious if I need to go take some racist classes so I can figger out how to be a normal whitey.
Yes, if you think all white people are racist then that is stereotyping. I personally think everybody is a little prejudice by the way, but that is another thread another time.
man u whiteys got it made, even when we call you a name like cracker, it's associated with a word that sounds wealthy like Ritz. Being a Ritzy Cracker aint half as bad as being a f***ing chink.
man i just wrote a hell-long reply but couldn't bring myself to post it. long story short? it will be a few more generations before racism really melts away. the remnants are still there and we're not far enough removed from the 60's etc i will say racism is a two-way street. those looking for "racism" in others will find it if they want.
Segregation was a policy of discrimination that was clearly seen. You can't stop all discrimination - it's just not possible. You can't tell someone who provides crappy service to people they think won't tip well that they are in violation of the civil rights law. How do you prove they were discriminated against, and that they got crappy service because they were black? I am not sure it is possible. Now, if there was an unsaid policy of providing blacks worse service, and workers at the restaurant knew about it and could testify that such a policy existed - yeah, you have something there. But that's not the case here.
Gay men tip the best. I used to be homophobic when I was a teen. Waiting tables and bartending changed all that.
Why? If black people should just deal with racism, why can't waiters just deal with occasionally being called racist?
NewYorker is going to tell you that he's actually black so he should have a free pass to say something stupid like that about his own race.
