As a Hispanic, should I be offended when I see spic, beaner, anchor baby, wetback, mojado, greaser? Because I'm not.

What passion for spoken word. Idiots who use it, idiots who overeact to it.

Just bring back duels with pistols or swords and be done with it.

So if someone called you a wetback you'd just take it. Cool that's your personality. Not everyone is going to react positively to being called a slur.

I'm Latino and as a member of a civil society I wouldnt be fond of being called a wetback. I'd voice my disapproval because well, I tend to stick up for myself.

Nothing wrong with either reaction in my opinion.

In this case, we aren't talking about someone who said a racial epitaph, we are talking about a small group of school kids you used a school event, on school grounds, wearing a school-provided uniform, to communicate a racial epitaph over social media.

Boggles my mind that this stuff happens today. This would have been insane twenty years ago when I went to high school...and we didn't have cameras everywhere. The word "sensitivity training" gets used a lot, but I feel like that has a lot more to do with it than "hate". It's almost like some kids these days don't fully understand the impact of using that word.

I've seen some comments along the lines of their "heart is full of hate." Their parents failed. They should be publicly shamed. They should be expelled. This should follow them through the rest of their lives. All seems a bit presumptuous to me.

Of course, I could be totally wrong, but I think it's more likely they were being dumb, idiotic teenagers, and at the spur of the moment tried to think of an obscene word they could spell out given the letters they had (they had just spelled out a long senior yearbook message before this). Probably thought they were being "clever" as the OP suggests and never thought about it or considered that it would get out.

Whatever the reason, hopefully this is a wake-up call to them and they learn from it.

I think I'd laugh at them...maybe react with an appropriate response, but I wouldn't make it a national event. Words are as bad as you let them be. Playground rules apply.

    Sticks and stones...sticks and stones.

Yeah, no one should really care. They are a bunch of racist as far as I'm concerned.

Kids being thoughtless and dumb. 5-day suspension sounds fine to me.

I also think some additional assignment (eg a paper on racism, some form of public service) so that its not just a five day vacation. If I was the school, I wouldn't allow them to participate in the graduation ceremony.
