he definitely does the swing move up and under there arms alot, I'm not sure who thinks he doesn't. Thats his go to move when he catches his player napping. But, just because he doesn't get that call, doesn't mean he'll be less effective. That was just a gimmick to get more free throws, but he can shoot and he'll still draw fouls. He's a smart player as alot of guys have already mentioned.

Don't see it as a big deal. One, no telling if the refs will actually change their calls -- it seems like half of rule changes don't make it to the floor anyway. And two, it's only a slight adjustment to make sure you're in a shooting motion when contact is made. And the alternative is not terrible -- you still keep possession.

I like the rule change though. I hope they are effective in calling it right.

kobe is the best swing thru foul getter, way better at it than martin.

Martin seems to get the odd one early in the game, Kobe pulls them out in crunch time, lol

since Martin is a shooter I don't think we should worry. It's likely he needs to shoot more from the field anyway. Also, maybe this is why he cools down so much. He needs to stop hitting the foul line and start hitting more shots and building heat. I strongly have suspected that's why he disappears at the end of games. Either way, Martin shooting more from the field is a good thing.

Guys, it will still be a foul, just a non-shooting one, and if the other team is over the limit he will still shoot FTs.....

It will have a little effect but not that much.

We'll see how it goes, I read this and IMMEDIATELY thought of Wade. King of getting FTs for jumping into guys on his drives.

The jump-hop rule will effect a large amount of perimeter guys, Wade and LeBron included.

Traveling's against the rules too, but we see how well that gets called.

No, it's still a personal foul.

I hate the way Martin get's his fouls. Pump fake, defender goes straight up and down and Martin jumps into the defender, drawing the foul. If anything Martin should be called for an offensive foul. I cringe evertime I see him do that, which is weird b/c he's on my team.

I agree, whomever initiates the contact should be the one the foul is called on.

New rules to defang Kevin Martin

The NBA has implemented a set of new rules ("points of emphasis") for the upcoming season.

    http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/7329584/nba-alters-emphasis-shooting-fouls-2011-12

Among these are a couple which will dramatically reduce Martin's incredible efficiency and his ability to impact the game by drawing shooting fouls:
"Rip-through" moves, in which an offensive player swings the ball into a defender's outstretched arm and then attempts a shot once he has created contact, will be considered non-shooting fouls if the contact begins before the offensive player starts his shooting motion.
Also, on drives to the basket, a shooting foul will be called only if contact occurs after the offensive player has begun his shooting motion, not after he has initiated his leap toward the basket."
Martin excels at these moves and they have consistently afforded him 6+ FT attempts per game. While they will still be fouls (thus helping us get to the bonus and hampering saddling the defensive player with personal fouls), this will likely cost the Rockets 5+ points more than our opponents next year. That's probably worth a handful of games.

I actually thought towards the end of the season he relied less on the "lawyer ball" tactics because the refs weren't giving him the calls. As a result he was getting better results going to the basket.

Durant is also a big culprit in this one. When he does his size up move at the three point line he always tries the swing move.

A called foul is a finished play. While it won't be a shooting foul any more, it still will be a foul and can lead to freethrows. Fouls are more valuable than just 2 pts. Especially when it is a great free throw shooter drawing the foul.

By drawing the foul it makes the defender more conscious and forces him to give you more room to operate. Also if the defender happens to get in foul trouble...."He found himself a yummy bear!!!"
