    Dear *

After an appropriate period of deliberation, I have come to the decision to tender my resignation from, * , effective November 10, 2000.

Please know that I still maintain a high level of respect for you as a manager and colleague, and I thank you sincerely for the support and assistance you have offered me in each of those roles. I have been proud to work for * over the past eight years; it has been a journey that has provided me an unparalleled foundation to move forward to new and exciting opportunities.

As such, I have decided to become a professional pirate. It has always been a dream of mine to live the life of a swashbuckling corsair, beholden to none and master of all I survey. Once my crew of unabashed rogues is assembled, we shall take to the capacious expanse of the high seas to pursue fortune, fame, and hair-raising adventure.

Our path may not be filled with the porcine comforts and technological marvels that * provides, but we shall nonetheless move forward to carve a name for ourselves in the annals of bold insurgency and death-defying derring-do. Once I have a keen blade at my hip and the Jolly Roger is flapping high above me, I believe I will find my true calling.

Please note that I am currently accepting applications for First Officer, if you are at all interested in applying. I will provide a full medical and dental plan, which will offer immediate coverage of all maladies other than scurvy and the occasional bout of rickets.

    Sincerely, *

Definitely type up a resignation letter, as HR probably needs it for their files. Deliver the news in person. It's just more professional. Also, if HR gives you an exit interview, DO NOT SAY ANYTHING BAD ABOUT YOUR COWORKERS, BOSS, OR COMPANY. Resist the urge to go negative.

    Question for the gallery:

Why is accepting a counter-offer from your current employer bad?

Tell them you are gay, and thus you cannot fulfill your duties at the company anymore.

    http://www.jobconnection.com/jobcon...For+Not+Accepting+a+Counteroffer/default.aspx

Ten Reasons For Not Accepting a Counteroffer

    1. What type of company do you work for if you have to threaten to resign before they give you what you are worth?
    2. From where is the money for the counteroffer coming? Is it your next raise early? (All companies have strict wage and salary guidelines which must be followed).
    3. Your company will immediately start looking for a new person at a lower salary price.
    4. You have now made your employer aware that you are unhappy. From this day on, your loyalty will always be in question.
    5. When promotion time comes around, your employer will remember who was loyal, and who wasn't.

    6. When times get tough, your employer will begin the cutback with you.
    7. The same circumstances that now cause you to consider a change will repeat themselves in the future, even if you accept a counteroffer.
    8. Statistics show that if you accept a counteroffer, the probability of voluntarily leaving in six months or being let go within one year is extremely high.
(I read somewhere 80 PERCENT do)
    9. Accepting a counteroffer is an insult to your intelligence and a blow to your personal pride, knowing that you were bought.
    10. Once the word gets out, the relationship that you now enjoy with your co-workers will never be the same. You will lose the personal satisfaction of peer group acceptance.

Its almost better to just leave or quit entirely, work another job or no job and be away from the company for a while then reapply with them. It'd at least appear you were looking for the greener grass and "came to your senses" and and it look like a momentary lapse of unhappiness. Rather than staying on and getting the squeeze treatment the whole time.

I definitely learned this the hard way - always try to leave a company on good terms no matter how tempted you are to say negative things.

On another note that is completely contradictory to what I typed up above - I have always had this fantasy that if I won the lottery and never needed to work again, to go into my job and do as many annoying things possible and see how long it would take for them to fire me.:p
