Terence Jones an undersized 5? I fear a new Morey drafting strategy.

On some level, I do embrace the change in drafting.

The OP has a point. In that Terrence Jones can log in some minutes at the 5.

Terrence Jones has a very Lamar Odom(esq) game, in that he's not what you consider a traditional big. He's a big with guard like skills, while still possessing great size and can defend position's 3 through 5. Terrence Jones gives us a great weapon coming off the bench, with his versatility. I could easily see him becoming a great sixth man.

Jones is more like a rich man's LeBron James with the competitiveness of Kobe Bryant and the fashion sense of Russell Westbrook

I agree that Jones is bigger and stronger than most people actually think. People are fooled by his athleticism into thinking that he is a tweener and too small to be a PF. However, I think he is going to be great as a back up PF for us this year if he gets the minutes. He will do everything we have wanted Patterson to do for us, and be faster and jump higher while doing it.

Jones has very similar reach&vertical as Patterson, but Patterson is much stronger. If Patterson can return to his rookie level after recovering from injury, he should have a better chance to man the middle.

With his skillset, he can play pretty much any position. I'm shocked Rockets were able to pick him @ #18. The only reason he's perceived as a 'PF' is because of his height. He has elite level skills he wasn't able to fully showcase in college because of all the talent around him.

As long as he is taking those minutes from Scola, then I am fine with him playing the 5.

lee -- How would you compare Jones and Robert Horry? I liked your Derrick McKey comp.

I'm curious to see how Jones develops. He's still only 20. It wouldn't shock me to see him logging substantial minutes at the 5 in 4 or 5 years, especially as part of a small ball lineup, but it all depends where he takes his skillset.

A lot of guys like him seem to want to develop their perimeter games, and I hope he doesn't fall too far into that trap.

So what you're saying is that size really matters?

Amare was actually a center for a while with the Suns. Remember that? He actually did pretty well there with Marion at PF. Did you say Amare played "small"? On offense he was an absolute beast. On defense, yes he was another story, but which offensive based centers did he have to guard outside of the ones nobody can guard? If you look at it now, theres Bynum, Howard, Pekovic, Cousins, Nene, etc. There are very few true centers in the league that have an offensive game in which Terrence Jones can't defend, so on most nights it doesn't really matter. My point was that he has the potential to play the center position. Notice how in my title/op, I never stated that he will be an all-star center, or even a full time starter at the center position. I merely pointed out his potential to be a center or at least play some at the 5. That's all.

Agree with most of this. However, my point was that he has the potential to be that center based on his measurements, and others with similar measurements have done the same; not that he was going to be that center for sure.

    "potential to play center effectively"

Chuck barely played the center position effectively as a starter. Really only against smaller centers. He was already used to playing in the post and that was after adding several pounds to his frame. I just think it's unrealistic. Potential to play limited minutes, mainly in emergency cases? Sure. Just like Lee had potential to play point and aaron brooks had potential to play SG, but how effective can they really be full time in an unnatural position?

If we're facing the clippers and for some reason they put Odom or Griffin in at center, then Jones could play center. However, by that logic, if Chris Paul was put at center, then Lowry could play center too.

Hakeem Olajuwon is quoted saying he is really closer to 6'8 barefoot, and he was listed a 255. Just saying.

WTH??! Rudy Gay has a 8'11.2" standing reach. You won't see him playing center. If we want to lose games we play Jones at center. He might have a better standing reach than those guys but he does play bigger than them? He doesn't play bigger than Hortford or Noah. He's perfectly suited for the PF position and can switch to SF if needed. However I don't see him as a full time SF because he doesn't have the ball-handling skill or quickness.
