We are over the cap. Letting those players walk and not trading for talent we just lose the players. We dont have "money to use." Unless you are talking about worrying about the LT threshold and whether or not we use the MLE because of it.
I think Fred Jones is a nice name from your list. Jones is an interesting name because the Pacers are loaded with talent and might want to reduce payroll and tighten up their rotation. Some of those players are more attainable than others. I like Mo Evans and thought he was an interesting name that was a FA over the summer. I dont think we can get Mo Williams from the Bucks. He has been huge for them this year. Buckner and Snyder do nothing for me. Not sure we could get Childress with what we are offering.
I would also love to get Fred Jones. He is very athletic, and would be the perfect complement for the slow bunglers on out team. He would also be a formidalbe perimeter/ slashing threat with TmAC.
I'm glad your not holding your breath, because we certainly don't need another medical emergency. I don't have a specific answer, which puts me in the same camp as the ENTIRE ROCKETS ORGANIZATION! But I know what not to do, stop bringing in retirees.
I thought about this last night as well. They are WAY over the cap and this is Jones' last year of his contract. They are not going to want to give him a raise when they have Jackson, Artest, Bender, Jasikevicious (sp?) & Granger who can all pay the 2/3. You give them an expiring contract, like a Wesley (who could still contribute for them this season) and maybe a pick, he could be very attainable.
Indiana won't be interested. They'll do what they did with James Jones, wait till the end of the season and sign and trade for a pick.
Is IC2000 in fact Jonathan Feigen, feeding us previews of his upcoming stories?: http://www.houstonchronicle.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/bk/bkn/3502588.html
Any trade will more than likely include a pick or package of picks. I can't see JVG caoaching forever, the dude is too intense to last for a long time. I think he is probably thinking "win now" and isn't worried about the future as much. I am not sure how I feel about that.
I have a feeling that the trade will not be a popular one. Teams in distress rarely get good return in trades. It is more about finding players that may suit your system better, rather than finding better players. I remember the Wesley trade last year didn't get favorable reception initially, and I am afraid this coming trade (if there is one) may again cause a lot of people asking WTF?
There is a 0% chance that JVG will be fired during the season. He was able to turn around this team last year by making a few trades and tweaks. He deserves the same chance this season. If we still stink at the end of the year then he can be fired.
