UPDATE! So I called up and was transferred from the associate AD office to the football office to the head coach's office (SHULA b****ES!...kind of odd that I was transferred there) back to the main athletic department number. When I talked to the head coach's office, I said I was a Sport Admin major at Miami, but live in 'Bama and I wanted to see if there was any type of intern or volunteer work available over the summer. Well, the lady said that there was some "major reshuffling" going on and that any positions filled are most likely taken by players and GA's (Graduate Assistants?). So back to the main athletic department office and after asking if there was any type of work I could do, she was very kind and nice enough to go ask her supervisor, I guess, and then came back a few minutes later, apologized for taking so long and then gave me the answer. Can't say enough about Southern hospitality. Anyway, she said that any positions are "absolutely filled" and some of their students are interested (I don't know how many are "some," but she did ask me if I was an Alabama student (which I'm not) and that might have "hurt" my chances, but whatever). So I did get the number for the basketball camp that Coach Mark Gottfried hosts...in which I just learned will only be until late June, the same time I RETURN from taking courses in New York. So CRAP! But when I asked if sending in my resume was worthwhile she said it was a great idea considering my name would be on file if they ever do need any help. And, of course, it helps to call earlier rather than wait less than a month until summer begins! So the moral is: CALL EARLY, but CALL ANYWAY; give it a shot. I can understand how "positions" would be filled at a major university, so if there's maybe a smaller DIV I or II school, you might have a better chance. Looks like I'll take classes this summer; next year I'm planning on heading up to Cooperstown for a Hall of Fame internship that sounds pretty amazing; this time I planned ahead; I already corresponded with the coordinator about this one.
Im studying the same thing in Mexico City, im in 3ยบ semester (2nd year) and I like it is very good major, the job field I think is huge: you have gyms, teams (amateurs or profesionals) In a school, you could be the Sports director, or in the Olympics Institution, or in the USA basketball, or in school teaching PE. Is not too competitive as other majors. Im very happy right now with this major, you should take it, and dont wait for anybody. Go for it!! Good luck!!
Of course being a PE teacher is something that I do NOT plan on being...it's actually the main concern the parents have with me choosing this major, haha.
If I ever went into teaching, I'd be a gym teacher. They make just as much as regular teachers, and they don't really do anything.
Yes, say you did that...way to set your goals high, haha. Not to be rude, but I honestly think being a grade school PE teacher is just notches above a janitor. Oh and, why the @#&$ would you want to make as much money as a teacher?!!?!?! (Again, if you were to be a teacher)
I don't want to be a teacher. I don't ever think I'm ever going to, or ever could be a teacher. I'm just saying that if I were, I'd be a high school gym teacher. Make just as much as a regular teacher, and play all day long.
