14 years ago, when I was in 8th grade, we had a woman come to perform a little one act play about slavery and Harriet Tubman. When she broke into Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, a big group of people busted out laughing. She stomped off and didn't come back. So yes, I think it's always been that way.
Our society is so relaxed that we sometimes forget how to treat people with basic respect...that goes for people into their 40's, IMO. Some folks are just immature and jerks. They come in all generations. But we're talking about the general body. But there is something about today's time where people just don't have basic ettiquette. I think it stems from the flower-child free spirit generation. The next babies out of that generation I think knew more ettiquete but conciously chose not to follow it much. Therefore, the children three generations removed have no clue. Kids these days don't just rebel against authority...it doesn't even occur to kids today that respect is even an option. They wouldn't even know how to be respectful if they wanted to. All-the-while demand to be praised for everything. That's the difference between the idiot high school kids of my generation and kids of the up-comming generation. Kids today get awards for 5th place and are told they did a great job for everything. Well, they've got a dose of reality coming when they get to work and are constantly ignored because they don't get constant pats on the back for mediocrocicy.
