on the surface, ESPN gives off the image of being about sports. when in reality it's really sports entertainment, ie WWE. are sports and entertainment interchangable? sure. but when a network will air dunks on yao over and over again w/o showing yao's dunks or blocks on them, it shows their biases and their trying to save face (from all that yao bashing before the season). that's weak.

IS IT WORTH IT????!!!! DAMN STRAIGHT IT IS! our opponents make 100% of the dunks yao doesn't contest. does that answer the question. hell, it's worse when opposing 2s and 3s are raining threes. those are worth 1 point more than dunks. so should our guards leave them wide open b/c it's humiliating to get a trey in your face? i think not.

I dont mind Yao getting dunked on (it happens to everyone) but Yao needs to give some hard fouls sometimes when guys try to dunk on him. Certain instances when he is out of position for the block, he should go up and foul hard.

On a secondary note, its funny to say but it seems like he plays better after he gets dunked on (more aggression). I recall right after he got dunked on by Kobe, he came back with a monster dunk of his own.

what are you talking about. Basketball is a team sports. If your opponent come to attack the rim, you gotta defend that as a big man. There is no such thing come to help.

Exactly, if a cat is coming to the rim looking to dunk you can either give a hard foul or try and contest the shot. However, if you contest the shot and get your ass dunked on that is 100% unadulterated humiliation. You can make excuses for your player, but know that the rest of the league is justified in chastising that poor posterized individual.

For instance when Yao or Francis dunks on someone, you don't think, "Damn, that guy really showed some guts trying to block that shot, nice effort". :p

you have to look at the people we are talking about here. who hasnt kobe dunked on? same for finley. the fact that these plays are so celebrated is a testament to the amount of respect people have for yao as a defender. face it, if greg ostertag is dunked on, it's not going to be shown as many times because its not that impressive of a feat.

That's not true. It just doesn't happen very often because Yao's guy is generally not someone who is going to go to the basket and require help.

I want to say that happend in the Hawks game, or similar. I think Ratliff outplayed him and dunked, not on him though just beat him. Yao came back and powered in for a dunk and got a T...sort of. I don't think I'll ever forget that play. :)

    It's just a game.

    Yao will never be demoralized.

    He will stand strong.

    He is the man.

    It is good for him.

He knows it won't be easy in the NBA.

He has to be more aggressive.

It is better to contest shots than just let them dunk....

I wish Yao was like Cato on the perimeter....try to block every jumper....but of course that won't happen.

If Yao stands there watching people dunk, wouldn't he be called soft, no heart and non-aggressive by some fans around here?

Yao is a competetive player and a team player. If he could he would contest every shot even when there's a chance to get posterize.

So what if he's get posterized? He shows heart and many times he get really good blocks.

Although I'm a little mad because Cat & Griffin gets beat and put Ming in a embarrassing situation. To Yao, contest shot even though he will get dunk on is something he's supposed to do. That's what he's taught, as a team player.

Props to Yao. Sometimes I wish Yao would just put a hard foul on those guys, he's still too nice.

This is stupid. Hakeem got dunked on several times as well. That is gonna happen when you are the shotblocker and you come to help. Lots of times the shotblocker will simply back off instead of getting the foul. Yao seems to go halfway and sort of swat at the ball AND try to avoid body contact at the same time. So it looks like he gets dunked on, but the fact is he doesn't want to get a foul. This is a dumb topic, what about when our guards get repeatedly burned on the perimiter, I wonder if they feel shame about that?

Yao gets dunked on more in a month than Dream in a few seasons. It's a little disturbing actually. His heart is willing but he's just not quick enough to close on a hard driving big guard or forward a lot of times. I wish he'd give some hard fouls though. Throw a couple people on their butts and people won't be so anxious to come back. I think he'll learn that eventually. Like Calvin says, you gotta pay the cost to be the boss.

There should be a statistical category on the ratio of "Being dunked on" : "Blocked or Altered-and-missed dunks"

I can bet you the ratio is way higher for Yao than Shaq. So what if Yao gets dunked on a lot if he plays good aggressive defense?

Just give Yao Ming some time to adjust to the mentality of the NBA. It's such a contrast to what he's accustomed to.

This year is just a feeling out process. The etiquette of Chinese basketball doesn't apply in the NBA. Yao isn't even used to dunking on people yet, b/c it's considered showboating in China.
And he still seems hesitant to risk knocking someone to the ground when contesting a shot.

Once he develops a healthy mean streak on the court, he is going to be taking it to opposing players a lot more, like when he was rejecting Shaq, and like when he dunked in Theo Ratliff's mug and drew a technical (which was a silly call by the way). He's only scratched the surface of his potential. It's going to be fun watching him realize all of it.

I agree. I think Yao's "being dunked on"/"block and change shots" ratio is not too bad.
